Meet Noel Velasquez

We had the good fortune of connecting with Noel Velasquez and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Noel, what inspires you?
Growing up in Houston, there were a lot of local radio deejays and music deejays I was inspired by as well as other personalities across the country. Locally in radio I was inspired by Jammin J, I would listen to his 8pm countdown every weeknight on back then Party 104.9FM. I was always drawn to radio here in Houston listening to personalities like DJ Ebonix, Mad Hatter, and Cesar Augusto. My dad has been a DJ since the 80s here in Houston, so you can say I was born into this crazy world that is deejaying and ultimately having the opportunity to be in radio. On a national level some of the radio personalities that I look up to even today are Alex Sensation from New York, DJ Camilo, Big Boy on the radio and an old school radio personality named Kid Kelly.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
This whacky roller coaster life as a DJ and Radio Personality is not for the weak. I think what sets me a part from others is that, I am on air on an all English format and at night all I’m playing is Latin music, it’s the best of both worlds. I am currently on air on 104.1 KRBE and I help with scheduling music as well as production when needed. Nothing is easy, I remember doing overnights Tuesdays 10pm-2am on KTSU 90.9FM then having class on Wednesday at 9am I was doing that then the opportunity to intern at Krbe came about and the rest is history. I learned a lot about the radio business and the difference between public radio and commercial radio. One thing that I have learned is the same way you get where you want to be it can go away in a blink of an eye. I am always thankful and grateful for the opportunities that I have been a part of and the sky is the limit, gotta keep going for more. Ultimately I want people to know about me is that the same person that I am on stage or at the radio is the same person you’ll see out and about. I come from a very united family from El Salvador and I know my success is their success and vice versa.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Hang out with DJ NOEl I got you, We will go out to dinner to Pappasitos, Crawfish Cafe (when in season), Brothers Taco House, Lazo’s Pupuseria. For the night life I will take them to the spots where I am currently at El Centro, Vida Garden, Pick Your Poison, Medellin. Also, an Astros game is a must!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
As far as my DJ Career goes first and foremost my Dad, he paved the way for me to learn a vast variety of music and dominate the private event scene like weddings, quinces, birthdays etc. Now, for my Club deejaying career I have to give props to my brother DJ WIlly B, I would always go with him and hear him spin and it was because of him I started to get a glimpse of the club world. I would say the big club that put me on the map was when I started at Fabian’s Latin Flavors that really got me into Main Street in downtown then from there I went on and started working with Empire Mike and he has been taking the club world here in Houston like no other owner, he has the hottest bars and clubs and I am proud to be a part of that team. For my radio career I have to give it to Donna Franklin from KTSU 90.9FM, she saw something in me and molded me into the radio person that I am now, she really gave me the ins and outs while I was in college and she was the best mentor anyone could ask for. Fast froward to now, at Houstons #1 Hit Music Station, KRBE the team there is incredible. I have to give my flowers to Leslie Whittle, Kevin Quinn, Special K and YO-J. They all help me out and give me advice and help me keep sharp with the skills I’m learning each and every day,
