We had the good fortune of connecting with Ny’L Thompson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Ny’L, how do you think about risk?
I believe in living without regrets. I always tell myself, “You don’t want to look back and say, ‘I should’ve done that.’” So when it comes to risk-taking, I run it through a personal checklist: Is it safe? Is it legal? Will it cause harm to anyone? Is it ethical?
If the answers align, then I ask myself the final question: “Why not?” If I can’t come up with a valid reason not to take the risk, then I know the only thing standing in my way is me. And honestly, that’s often the case for most of us! We can be our biggest obstacle. Fear, doubt, overthinking… it’s not always the world holding us back. Sometimes, it’s just us.

Taking risks has played a major role in both my life and my career. From deciding to go away to college to becoming an avid traveler, I’ve consistently stepped outside my comfort zone. Professionally, growing a business means networking and collaborating with people from all walks of life, people with different beliefs, backgrounds, and communication styles. Sometimes you click, and sometimes you don’t. But either way, it’s a risk you have to be willing to take if you want to evolve.

What should our readers know about your business?
I’m the founder of Sunshine Therapeutics, a Psychotherapy private practice rooted in compassion, cultural awareness, and realness. What sets my work apart is how deeply personal it is. I don’t just show up as a therapist, I show up as a human who knows what it’s like to carry heavy things and still try to function in the world.

Getting to where I am today wasn’t easy. I didn’t come from privilege. I was adopted, I’ve navigated complex family dynamics, and I know firsthand what it means to struggle and still rise. Starting and growing a business as a Black woman in the mental health field meant constantly advocating for myself, finding resources where there were none, and learning to keep showing up, even when I didn’t feel ready.

I’m most proud of building something that reflects my values and serves people who often feel unseen or unheard. Sunshine Therapeutics isn’t about perfection, it’s about being real, creating space for you to feel safe, and reminding people that they don’t have to do life alone.

The biggest lesson I’ve learned? Trust your vision, even when it’s quiet. You don’t have to be loud to be impactful. And you don’t need everyone to get it. Just the ones who need what you carry.

What I want the world to know is that as long as you believe in yourself, nothing can stop you. Not what you’ve been through, not what you’re going through, and not what’s to come. Everything you need to be successful is already within you. The key is not just believing it, but acting on it. That’s where the transformation happens.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Hmmm… Okay, so I know my best friend. First we are checking out thrift stores on a whimsical. Im talking, from one thrift to the next, just by putting it in the GPS and seeing which one is closest. This will turn into us shopping, with a little time for hand sanitizer and French fries.

We absolutely MUST go to Tokyo Ramen Sushi’s happy hour from 2-6p!

My best friend is an artist so I know she will have a list of museums she would like to visit. My favorite museum in Houston that I have been to is the Museum of Natural Science, specifically the Cockrell Butterfly Center. Second best goes to Contemporary Arts Museum.

It’s Houston, so of course she isn’t leaving on a Sunday!! Which allows us to brunch at my favorite spot, Lost & Found.

Lastly, a must do for her and I is a picnic at Buffalo Bayou to enjoy the views.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Of course, my mother. The support is unmatched. She pushes me to believe I can do anything (except sing lol).
