We had the good fortune of connecting with OKEOGHENE OROTOMA and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi OKEOGHENE, what is the most important factor behind your success?
The most important factor behind the success of my brand is setting myself away from the crowd, being unique in my ideas, people might think you are crazy at first but just go on and sacrifice, going where there’s no path and creating one, it took a while though but it stands the taste of time
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I started drawing and painting 🖌️ as a kid as far back as I can remember, my parents were the first to recognize my creative tendencies, my dad specifically asked me if I wanted to be a painter or be in the artistic field, I said no I was just doing it for fun, I loved it but I was so scared to admit because on an African home for you to say you wanted to be a film maker, musician, artist or anything besides being a doctor, lawyer or engineer was like a taboo few years ago, maybe even now, so fast forward I was doing some art work while still in middle school and high school, I would hear a song play on the radio and start writing treatment for the song on how I would direct it if I was the director, and most of the songs I wrote the video ideas for came out with at least two scenes resembling my ideas, after high school I started helping friends to direct music videos , i was limited because I didn’t know how to operate cameras and edit , I started editing with windows movie maker which i wss introduced to by Gabriel, my elder brother, also highly inspired by the great Clarence peters ( a well known music video director in Nigeria) i muscled up the courage to ask my parents to study abroad to get some good knowledge on film making, they agreed and I left nigeria and moved to Malaysia , i studied film and television on limkokwing school of creative technology, then moved to the states , its not been easy, majorly working with clients who wants you to replicate the same idea as another clients job , or pay less and wants a big camera gears, i am proud of how many persons my job has influenced positively
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I am not much of an outside person but I will definitely take my friend to some African spots to eat fufu, then go to jiu jitsu class with me to get some self defense lessons at my training gym “elite MMA”
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
