We had the good fortune of connecting with Omar Rodriguez and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Omar, what inspires you?
I’m inspired by success and growth. Growing up with immigrant parents you are taught from a very young age to work hard and to pretty much make something out of nothing. I’m all about perseverance and working hard and going after what I know is meant for me. I don’t like being comfortable and safe because you never know what you are holding yourself back from if you are too afraid to make a change for the better. I strive off of my success and always cheering on my friends and peers and always looking to help in any way that I can.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I started my journey in the hair world back in 2017. It took me about 3 years to finally complete cosmetology school due to life happening. I was diagnosed with cancer at the time and had to step away for a bit. Honestly, even though it was the hardest time of my life I used that as a way to fuel my fire and ambition. I made a promise to myself that once I was in better health I would go after everything that I wanted out of life. Now 3 years behind the chair, I’m so passionate about my art and making sure all of my clients leave feeling like the best version of themselves. I know how hard it is to struggle with personal appearance. So I take so much pride in being a part of the process of making somebody feel better about themselves. Everyday I show up and try to do my best work and I am constantly trying to keep myself up to date with all the techniques by taking classes and finding new ideas through social media.

Not only is my job physically hard it is also mentally hard. In the beginning of my career I was so hard on myself when I would make mistakes or if my work wasn’t up to my standards. Ive learned to treat all my mistakes as lessons learned and use that as stepping stones to further advance in my career.

Ive already experienced, what I feel, the lowest point in my life so now I only focus on positivity, growth and happiness. I love to laugh and be happy and be surrounded by good energy. I treat all and care for all my clients as if they were family.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I love hanging around in the Montrose area for some drinks and to hangout after a long week at the salon. The Heights is always a great area to find some good food, there is so much variety there. Galleria area is home to me so I’m always at a restaurant near by or at the Galleria Mall spending some money that I shouldn’t be! Ra Sushi Bar will forever be my first option for some good food.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would not be where I am today without the support of my family and my amazing boyfriend who is also a hairstylist as well. I always joke around and tell him that I owe him my career since I did meet him at my very first salon and he pretty much took me under his wing and set me up for success with all of his tips and tricks.
