We had the good fortune of connecting with Pat Louis and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Pat, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
My thought process for starting my own business was to share my seasonings with individuals that needed or wanted a flavorful seasoning without salt, sugar and other additives.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
My business is a seasoning company. What sets my business apart from others is my products do not contain salt, sugar, paprika or MSG, but is extremely flavorful. My tagline for the company is “the smell will invite you, but the flavor will keep you.” This is certainly true. The big difference is the minus salt and still be flavorful. This comes from many years of mixing spices.
I’ve gotten to where I am by doing a lot of work. It was difficult initially and can still be at times. I had been mixing spices for years and giving them away to friends and families. Finally, I was asked, if I could just put it in a bottle and they would buy it. So, I bottled them, and that was the start of C’est Bon Seasoning. C’est Bon Seasoning can be purchased at select Kroger stores, Central Market stores in Texas and nationwide at Natural Grocers stores and we are continuing to grow.
I am a small business owner who entered a field that is dominated mainly by the big conglomerates and mostly males. It’s difficult to enter a market that has very few black women owners. There really isn’t a footprint and not much support for black women in this particular segment of the industry, although I am beginning to see some positive changes and growth emerging.
Some of the lessons I’ve learned along the way is to be prepared for the ups and the downs. Also, get used to hearing no, but be persistent because that one yes can really make a difference. I’ve learned to build relationships with other small business owners because we can all share knowledge and support can be very helpful.
I want the world to know that C’est Bon Seasoning is a company that is striving to make a positive difference in your health one bottle at a time. I want people to know that C’est Bon Seasoning does understand the fear of removing salt and sugar from your seasoning, but trust me I truly left the flavor in the bottle for you.
My brand does not want to harm your health or your family’s health, and I will not sell a product to you that I would not feed to my own family.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would visit Lucille’s for food because Chris is doing the most over there. The next stop would be the Black Market for shopping and my final places would be Discovery Green for outdoor relaxing and finish it off with a visit to the Taste Bar.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to dedicate my shoutout to my parents for teaching me how to blend spices and their love and support. I want to shoutout to all of those who have supported me and continue to do so. Thank you, from my heart.
