We had the good fortune of connecting with Paul Smith and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Paul, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I have always been an entrepreneur at heart. I grew up in a family that owned a small business and I saw what it took to be successful. Although I have always had a steady job with benefits and security, there was a constant itch that needed to be scratched to do things my way. I have had a side hustle most of my life starting with landscaping, then an industrial sign business which has been going for over 20 years now. When my daughter was younger, we thought about a promotions company but really didn’t do much with it at first. It wasn’t until recently that we really started working on it.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Up until we started Disturbing Designs, I had been in the corporate world in an industry where creativity is not really required. This left a desire to do be creative in some way. Working in the promotions arena has filled that gap and lets me be creative with designs and processes to get those designs on the products our clients want. It’s fulfilling to be able to provide a quality product to our clients that help the promote their brand and help them become more successful.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
One of the things I love about the Houston area is the diversity. There is so much to do and see, it’s easy to entertain. No matter what kind of food you’re in the mood for, you can find it here. Personally, I love Tex-Mex and Seafood. that’s where I start with guests. We have a variety of music venues to choose from. We also have a great museum district just. Depending on the time of year, there are street festivals other outdoor events to choose from. There is never a shortage of things to do..
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Family. Family is import to me and sharing my success with them is paramount. We started Disturbing Designs as a collaborative family effort and we all share in its success. We continue to hold each other accountable and work towards a common goal. We also consider our customers, vendors and partners as part of the family because when we are successful all of us are.
