We had the good fortune of connecting with Peggy Fuller and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Peggy, what do you attribute your success to?
By Design Interiors has been in business for over 31 years! My goal from the beginning was to build a design firm that is high-end, authentic and team driven. We have evolved from a spare bedroom office to a 3800 sq. ft studio with a staff of 12 women, equipped to handle any project. I believe there are many factors that play into our growth and success. Foremost, is my amazing design staff. They are so talented, hardworking, and fully supportive of each other. It is important for us to share our inspirations, resources, experiences, and achievements throughout the firm. All working together for the betterment of each other’s success and By Design’s as a whole. This was my vision from the start – creating a luxury design firm that is full of talented, compassionate, and hard-working women. I’m very proud of what By Design Interiors has become today.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
By Design Interiors specializes in high-end interiors, as a turnkey design studio we take on a wide range of projects including custom builds, new constructions, renovations, and home furnishings. We work alongside builders, contractors, and architects to ensure our clients’ home seamlessly matches their needs and vision. Our purpose is to ‘Explore the Possible’ for every client, creating beautifully unexpected homes that are both functional, innovative, and unique to you. I began By Design Interiors in 1990, to provide for my family. Design was all I knew…starting a business was uncharted territory. I read every book and article I could find about starting your own business and marketing. It was a lot prayer, long days, late nights, and working weekends. It’s been a rewarding journey full of hard work, setbacks, and successes. I feel these experiences are invaluable and the most effective way to learn. Its molding By Design Interiors into the success it is today. I am most proud of our 31 years, making a difference in the lives of our clients. Recently, we have expanded our services to the Austin, San Antonio, and San Marcos areas. It is exciting to see our firm still going strong and growing our creative reach. Lastly, I’d say the biggest lesson I have learned along this rewarding journey, is to pray more and follow your heart.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
What a fun question – I am turning to one of my Senior Designers, Erika Barczak on this one! She is always keeping up with the latest trends and fun places around Houston. Houston has so much to offer, from the museum district, great restaurants, parks, and shops! Here is what Erika had to say : “If my best friend was in town, here’s what I’d plan! First off, is exploring Houston’s amazing museums! They’re one of my favorite things about downtown. We’d go to the Houston Museum of Natural Science and check out the paleontology exhibit ( which is amazing and sparked my love for dinosaurs) and the Cockrell Butterfly Center where butterflies come land on you! Next up, is down the street to the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. They have a new interactive exhibit every few months and its always fantastic. Through November, the exhibit: The Radical: Italian Design 1965–1985, is on display! It showcases furniture, lighting design, architectural models, and paintings from the collection of Dennis Freedman. I highly suggest checking it out! Now on to the food…One of the best things about Houston! There so much variety, from all around the world. I would have to take my friends to Coltivare Pizza & Garden, Roost and Samurai Noodle. These are a few of my favorites! In the evening, we would plan a trip to Julep, a cocktail bar on Washington Ave. It’s super fun, female-owned and always full of funny, whimsical décor. Lastly, we would round out the week with a day trip to Galveston to have some delicious gumbo at Little Daddy’s Gumbo Bar or brunch at the Mosquito Café.” – Erika Barczak
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My story is one of ups, downs, successes, hard work and lots of prayer. Prayer has and continues to be my constant guide throughout this journey! Then, of course, my staff. They deserve a BIG shoutout! They are such a blessing. By Design Interiors could not have reached the accomplishment of 31 years in business without their without their hard work, dedication, love and respect for each other and a passion for design.
