We had the good fortune of connecting with Phoenix Jackson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Phoenix, let’s talk legacy – what do you want yours to be?
After more than 20 years in business—and really, a lifetime as an entrepreneur and executive—I’ve come to realize what I want my legacy to be. I want to be remembered as a first mover. As a Black woman who went into spaces and expanded ideas that neither Black nor white people had yet gone, and made change.

The truth is, I didn’t have many mentors growing up. I didn’t have people around me doing what I’m doing now. In fact, no one in my circle had ever been where I’m headed.

And yet, I’ve kept going. I’ve built, I’ve led, I’ve served—nationally and globally. I hope is that when people look back—my family, my friends, the communities I’ve touched—they’ll say, “She left her mark.” That because I showed up and did the work I was called to do, they are now in a better place.

I want to leave this planet better than I found it. I want people to look back and say, “That woman helped to move the human collective forward, because she was here, we’re all here—and we’re all better for it.”

That is the legacy I’m building.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
For the past 20 years, I’ve served as a Chief Communications Officer and an entrepreneur leading my own company. Recently, that journey evolved—we merged and rebranded into a new firm: New Sun Impact Studio.

The truth is, the world is shifting. It’s changing economically, emotionally, culturally—and the only reason I’ve been able to sustain and thrive in business for two decades is because I’ve adapted alongside it. I’ve paid close attention to the tides, watched the trends, and responded to the real needs of business owners and leaders.

In a world that is increasingly loud and noisy, my focus as a communications executive has always been simple: ensure the messaging, branding, and content we create truly connects with the people it’s meant to reach. Over the years, I’ve helped businesses, organizations, cities, NGOs, nonprofits, celebrities, and athletes build and rebuild brands that work for them—and more importantly, that serve the human collective.

Sometimes people come to me with nothing but a vision and a budget. Other times, they bring me legacy institutions—80 years old and ready for a full transformation. In both cases, I’ve made it my mission to breathe new life into their message, redesign their style, and enhance their customer and audience engagement.

I’ve taken pride in my role in the communications and public relations space. I believe deeply in the power of the pivot—and now, it’s time for mine.

Through New Sun, my focus has shifted to something urgent and essential: climate change, climate tech, and equipping the leaders and brands who are fighting for a livable future. These are the people and movements dedicated to not just surviving—but helping the planet and humanity thrive.

Moving forward, my commitment is to train, equip, and elevate these leaders—nationally and globally—through strategic communications that make their message clear, compelling, and impossible to ignore.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’m relatively new to Houston—I’ve been here for about three and a half years—but I’ve definitely found my go-to spots when friends come to visit.

First stop? Loch Bar for a chic vibe, good food, and great energy. Then we usually head over to Westheimer for shopping and just enjoying the city’s outdoor culture—it’s vibrant, full of life, and always something to see.

For something more active, I love taking people to Memorial Park. It’s beautiful, full of trails, food trucks, people out biking or skating—it just feels alive. Whether it’s a long walk, a bike ride, or just soaking in nature, it’s one of my favorite places in the city.

One of my absolute favorite things to do in any city, though, is go to a comedy Improv show. A good comedian, some cocktails, bites to eat, and laughs on a Friday or Saturday night? That’s heaven for me. I’ll go as often as I can.

And finally, I’m drawn to water. I love spending time near it—whether it’s Lake Houston, one of the marinas, or walking by the water spouts and forested trails around the city. Houston is at sea level, so water is always close, and that access to nature is something I really appreciate. It gives you a chance to disconnect from the busyness of the city and just breathe.

Those are my favorite things to do—and luckily, I get to do them often with all the friends who come to visit.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d like to dedicate this Shoutout article to my hometown—the city of Denver, Colorado.

Denver is one of those rare, unique places in the U.S. that is liberal, forward-thinking, and, while not without its flaws, is far more progressive than most cities in this country.

As a young Black woman growing up there, I became a Daniels Scholar and attended the University of Denver—arguably the most prestigious university in the state. That experience allowed me to grow, expand, and step into spaces no one around me had been before. I received not only an excellent education, but I was also surrounded by people who opened doors for me—and in return, I’ve been able to open doors for others, helping expand their work and impact as well.

Unlike many cities in America, Denver wasn’t as traumatic or painful an experience for me as a Black woman. It didn’t carry the same weight of systemic blockages or day-to-day negativity that Black people often face elsewhere. Because of that, I was able to strive—and thrive.

So, this dedication isn’t to one individual or organization—it’s to a city. A city that, in many ways, helped me become who I am. A city that, for all its complexities, continues to do its best to create space for those who are working to make real change.
