We had the good fortune of connecting with Pierre Perez and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Pierre, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Long story short it started when my wife bought me a beard care kit from a retail chain store. Upon using it I noticed that my beard was drying out and became very unhealthy. Trying different beard care companies over the years, I noticed that products on the market were hit and miss. After talking to my wife I told her that we could make a better product using scents I know people would love. With this idea, we started on a trial by error basis until we developed our current formulas for balms, oils, and waxes that works well on all types of hair.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
When we started this venture, we had no idea how to proceed. Neither one of us had ever done anything like this, we had never built a company or brand. We hadn’t even worked on developing a logo before. So, we were continually looking up topics, asking our friends, and feeling our way around. It has not been a smooth road, but, it hasn’t been horrible either.
As we are meeting more local vendors, we are continually learning and finding out about other avenues we didn’t know to explore or look in to. It really has been a growing experience for us in that we are coming up with new ideas, and, having to look in to how to grow with that idea. This is one of the biggest challenges we’ve had; there is no straight forward answer on how to grow a business; but, there are a lot of people and companies out there that will help guide you “for a small fee”. This is where we’ve learned to depend on ourselves and our vendor friends who have been down this same path.
We have worked hard to get to the point that we’re at now, we work to produce products that we can be proud of, we work to be genuine and honest. We want to be people that our kids are proud to call parents and people to be proud to call friends.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Houston is our home town which has so much diversity in it, with that being said, it is hard to just name a few places. First off, we would have breakfast at The Nook in Tomball Tx, everything on the menu is to die for. Second, we would then travel to Lambeau’s Sports Bar and Grill in Cypress Tx. Lambeau’s has a great steak night on Tuesday, and, of course you have to pair it with a good old fashioned. Our steaks and old fashions are even better when we get to listen to our friend Ryan Pinnick (HeRealGood.com) playing the guitar and singing! In between meals, we would check out some of the history Houston has to offer from the East end of Houston all the way to Lake Conroe.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to start my thanking my wife Cindy Quintero Perez for supporting my ideas from the very beginning. Although our journey has just begun, Cindy has been the light and guidance for Texas Tickler from social media ideas, sales tactics, and of course just being herself. Her will and determination has made me a stronger person knowing that even on the worst days, I will always learn from our mistakes to grow. Secondly, I need to shoutout to my mom, Norma Salazar. She has been Texas Tickler Beard Co biggest supporter since the day she found out we were going to do this. Not to mention, she also gave me the genes to grow an amazing beard! For all of this, thank you mom!
Lastly, we would like to thank some of our vendor family that have helped us along the way: Rick with Dulce Vida Treats TX, Josh with Grilling Geek Spices, Alexa with Defender Jerky, Christina with Texas Artisan Markets, and Rosalin with Sassy Lynn Inc. These people have given us business insight, encouragement, advise, and have given us light along the path – sometimes without even knowing it!
