We had the good fortune of connecting with Queen Muhammad and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Queen, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I have a few nick names, but most people know me as Queen Muhammad. I started Madd Pop Records in 2017 from my love for music and not hearing that soul sound that I heard growing up on the radio anymore. I love the new music but I wanted to hear more so since Philadelphia has been a huge part of the soul sound, I thought, why not start a record label.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Madd Pop Records, a Philadelphia based company, was started by Morshica Bouldin, also known as Queen Muhammad in 2017. We modeled our company after the original Motown model which was very heavy on artist development. We also borrowed the principles of teamwork from the dynamic duo also out of Philadelphia, Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff.
In this short period, we’ve managed various artists from all over the United States including California, Baltimore, New York, Virginia and Texas. And we’ve worked with musicians all over the world including Germany, Sweden and Zimbabwe.
Of course, even through all those ups, we had a lot of downs. Our original administration member Kevin Blackson decided to leave the company early on which left me to make a lot of executive decisions and abruptly take the reigns. I quickly acted to ask my long time friend and school mate, Jermaine Colon to fill Mr. Blackson’s position and he’s been here ever since.
As far challenges in the industry. It’s a very male dominated industry so misogyny and that male hierarchy is always a challenge. But I do not let it deter me because I have people counting on me. I do this in real life. This is my passion and I thank God he has allowed me to encounter and work for the most talented and uniquely gifted musicians on this planet. It’s been rough. I question myself if I would do it again, but all in all, I can say this experience has been a blessing and I truly thank every person ever a part of Madd Pop Records.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I always love water and seafood so no better place than the Baltimore harbor. It’s a little drive but it’s well worth it.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to Shoutout and thanks our team at Madd Pop Records especially Jermaine Colon @iconoclastservicesllc, who has been a dream business partner. I would like to Shoutout the current artists at Madd Pop Records Trish Discord @trishdiscord. She’s a guitar rocker chick from New York & LILmaurs @lilmaurs who’s a young dancer, rapper and recent 2020 graduate from Lower Merion High School just like the late great Kobe Bryant.
Lastly, I would Shoutout like to thank a recent partnering company and friend to Madd Pop Records, Rich Long @keepingpeoplerealtv who’s a Fort Worth, Texas native. He also a professional blogger, has a YouTube channel Keeping People Real Tv, and has actually released songs “24 Hours To Respond” and “Grind” through Madd Pop Records so he’s definitely family.
Speaking of family. Thanks to everyone who helped along the way. Family, friends, fans, and a special thanks to financial supporters who absolutely LOVE our unique sound and what we’re doing to show love to the culture and also understand the time, dedication and passion it goes into keeping this company open.
