We had the good fortune of connecting with Rachel Hubbard and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Rachel, what role has risk played in your life or career?
When I think about risk, I think about the phrase “calculated risk.” In other words, how big is the risk, and what makes this risk worth it, if anything? For me, both these questions come back to values. Is taking this risk going to lead me closer to, or father away from, my core values. If I value things like contribution, genuineness, creativity, etc then will having that difficult conversation, or taking that big swing with an idea, or starting my own business bring me closer to these values? If the answer is yes, the risk is usually worth it. There is a quote I like to that can be helpful with this: “One can choose to go back toward safety or forward toward growth. Growth must be chosen again and again; fear must be overcome again and again.”
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
My business is a therapy practice for individuals, couples and families. I specialize in anxiety, OCD, eating disorders, trauma and life transitions. My therapeutic styles include acceptance and commitment therapy, emotionally focused family therapy, exposure response prevention therapy, and somatic experiencing. I am most proud that I am really committed to learning, from my clients, from current research, and from different trainings, in order to always meet my clients with curiosity, openness, and a real dedication to their growth.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Some of the great activities and places that come to mind are: taking a walk in memorial park, going to an astros game, eating at Gatlins bbq, Post HTX, and Papasitos. The museum district and Zoo are also all really great. I really enjoy the performances at Miller Outdoor Theater as well.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
So many people! My husband is very supportive of everything I do. My parents, along with my family, have also always been very supportive. I have a good friend who went started her business about a year or so before me and she was super generous with her advice and experience and answered pretty much every question I had.
