We had the good fortune of connecting with Raisa Smoot and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Raisa, let’s start by talking about what inspires you?
I am inspired by people, places, things and the alchemy of life. The way people think and process things in their own way, is intriguing to me. I find myself often indulged in those of us in a constant state of evolution.
Places are essential bc I travel. I’ve been to Japan and Lived in South America. So learning new cultures and customs, from architecture to the apparel, can bring a lot of inspo.
Things and the alchemy of life, this is the most important one. Turning negatives into whatever it is that you desire will always serve as my main source of inspiration to tap into.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I believe what sets me apart from others is my ability to constantly change and learn. I love to create but I am a forever student. I’m most proud of British Vogue reaching out and then featuring me, along with other designers.
Most excited about this butterfly dress I’m currently making. I’m embroidering 150-180 freestanding lace butterflies (check my highlights on IG ‘Project1”), and then will hand sew them on a chiffon dress with boning in the bodice!
I got to where I am today by being fearless. I also have a degree from the Fashion Institute of Design & Merch, so that helps! But seriously, networking, staying true to self, never giving up, and having fun with it is how I got here.
No it was not easy. Lots of mental preparation and building!
The lessons I’ve learned along the way is “you do not have all the answers” “never be fearful of starting over! You will live”
I want the world to know that life is beautiful and as long as we get another day, never play with it.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’d take her to The Museum of Fine Arts, or Contemporary Arts Museum. We’d hit up Qoutes on the North Side, and then I’d take her line dancing at either Whiskey Rivers or Neon Boots. I have a 4 year old so I’d throw some day time kid friendly activities in there. The Woodlands has a lot of shops, restaurants, and outside areas where kids can play and feed the ducks. So we’d def go there.
And if it’s around May/June, Discovery Green throws live concerts on Thursdays and always have activities going on, so we’d hit that up too.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Shit, there’s so many ppl who have aided in my career and success so I’ll sum it up as my VERY close friends, my mom, & my mentor
