We had the good fortune of connecting with Regina Jazz and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Regina, how do you think about risk?
Risk taking has empowered me to dream big and its pushed me achieve my aspirations. It has become gratifying and rewarding in my career. I’ve discovered a whole new inner strength that I never knew existed. Risk taking freed me from fear and permitted me to be more flexible. I’m shooting for the sky and trudging into newer and undefined territories.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’m a Jazz artist who didn’t choose to sing Jazz, it chose me. I love how Jazz is full of broad styles of music characterized by complex harmonies, syncopated rhythms, and a heavy emphasis on improvisation. When I perform it liberates me and I’m the best version of myself on stage. I’d like to think its beneficial to anyone to be authentically themselves. Its helps set you apart. I honestly wouldn’t trade being myself for the world. My saying has always been ‘Being yourself is the best thing you can be’, its words I’ve learned to live by. Not only is it important to be yourself its also important to follow your dreams. I’m proud of the way I’ve decided to reach PAST the stars. To take the limits off my expectations; and that wishful thinking doesn’t have to wishful it can be reality. I literally went from being terrified to sing in front of anyone to performing fearless before thousands. I’d like to say it happened over night and I did it all by myself; But, that wouldn’t be true. In actuality, I learned to utilize self-affirmations, practice (lots and lots of this), build an amazing support system and most importantly prayer. I’ve learned God is the source of every opportunity, favor and success I’ve experienced. I want to leave a message through my music to the world that encourages, celebrates, brings hope, and rewards newness, originality, personality, and is meaningful expressiveness in music.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
First, let me start by saying, I love my city! We’re known to have GREAT food, our diversity and wonderful talent (lol). Im a big Sushi fanatic so Uchi is one of favorite places to eat. While I’m in Midtown, I love to visit Space Montrose its one the best art Galleries in Houston. If I wanted to hang out I’d go downtown and listen to live jazz music at Sambuca. Lastly, I love Comedy so I’d see who was performing at IMPROV and enjoy a late show.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d like to dedicate my Shoutout to my very loving and supportive mother. She always stands strong besides me and my sister in all of our ups and downs; supporting every decisions and interests. She’s given me the confidence to face the world and motivate me to achieve success in life. She is the one who sparked my interest in music at home and became my first teacher. She taught me behavioral lessons, biblical principles and true philosophies of life. She is a sacred statue of selfless love, sacrifices, forgiveness, and patience. She is the guiding soul who helps me always to progress on the right path. I will always do my best to make her happy and comfortable especially when she becomes old (lol). My plans are to bestow her with the same amount of love, care and understanding as she did with us when we were young.
