We had the good fortune of connecting with Richard “Joe” Holmes and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Richard “Joe”, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I’ve been in the hospitality industry since I turned 18, I’ve accumulated 31 years of experience. Throughout those 31 years, I’ve had the privilege to work for some of the most prolific operators in the country. While working for these great operators, I took it upon myself to learn as much as I could from them. I finally achieved a financial position that could launch my own venue. It only made sense to implement what I’ve learned to try to obtain financial freedom with my own business.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Becoming a successful restaurant, nightclub or bar operator takes hours of dedication. Often equating to work weeks in excess of 65-70 hours. Day in and day out. Often working 7 days a week. The challenge? Keep an eye and a finger on every aspect of the business. The devil is in the details. Don’t let payroll exceed a certain number. Don’t buy a lot of product on a week that you presume will be slow. Make sure you turn off unnecessary equipment when not in use, etc. seems easy, but when you have a list of other things you need to concentrate on, occasionally, you miss something.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I wouldn’t take my friends out. If they were visiting, we’d be doing things outdoors. When we were done doing those activities, we’d be at my home cooking and relaxing.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
The greatest influence in my career came while working for a high volume night club in Seattle Washington, Pollyesthers. The managing partner at the time was Cornelius A. Radan. He’s currently the owner of McFaddens and The Standard in Las Vegas, Nevada. He had an innate ability to think outside the box. This gift he possesses allowed him to create a desirable environment in whatever venue he ran. Coupled with his ability to control expenses and “Throw the party” as he used to say. Which, rewarded him great success in the industry.
