We had the good fortune of connecting with Rocío Oubre and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Rocío, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
I started my first business when I was in my 20s, an architectural design and construction company, was hard. Getting ahead in this business being a young woman was difficult but my passion for architecture and business made me work hard until I got a position in the industry. Happy clients, and watching my business growing gave me lots of satisfaction. Work was my priority, a 24/7 job. Unfortunately I got sick and God gave me a second chance to live, a second opportunity in this world. I realized there were so many things that I wanted to do, to see and experience, things and other passions that were hidden in my heart like my love for art, animals, nature and helping others, things that bring me joy and happiness. Now, I own an on line gift shop and I wrote and illustrated my first children’s book, balancing life with my volunteering time in a wildlife rescue center, a cancer institution, and the most important enjoying my family.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
This is a special year, I launched my first children’s book, written and illustrated by me. I had the opportunity to combine 2 of my passions, art and my love for animals, to create the 1st book of a series where the star of the story, based on real events, is my furry baby Jazmin (a Yorkshire Terrier). As a self publisher, strangling in every single step of the process was an everyday thing and having English as my second language does not make it easier, but perseverance is the only way to get where you want to be, and that it is one of my strengths.
Currently, I am running my gift shop “Dulce Dream Studio” promoting my book “Jazmin Saves a Baby Turtle” (published in 2 different editions and in 2 languages English and Spanish) and working on a soon available coloring book that would complement the children’s book.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I am blessed and time to time my friends come to visit me from Perú. I like them to experience the Texas vibes and share with them my favorite places and the scenery of my life . In a perfect week with a nice weather I would take them to Old Town Spring to get the country feeling and shop at the unique gift stores; I would take them to enjoy the nature by bicycling at one of our Spring Creek nature trails or kayaking at the Lake Woodlands. If we talk about food, definitely BBQ and I would take them to some of my favorite restaurants, Sushi Rebel at City Plaza and of course to Schilleci’s New Orleans Kitchen at Market Street the Woodlands to try the best cajun food since my husband is from New Orleans. Finally, they would need to enjoy some music like a concert at the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion, a country concert at the Dosey Doe the Big Barn.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
People that believe in you and love you unconditionally is one of the best things in life, fortunately God provided me with some of those in my life.
