We had the good fortune of connecting with Rod Neely and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Rod, is your business focused on helping the community? If so, how?
HBCU Strong, LLC is deeply committed to fostering community connections and enhancing the lives of individuals both locally and nationally, embodying our motto, “We Are Stronger Together.” Our organization recognizes that our strength lies in the support and engagement of the community, and we strive to make a meaningful impact through various initiatives throughout the year.

One of our cornerstone efforts is the Annual Winter Clothing Drive, where our coaches across the country mobilize to collect over 340+ Lbs of winter clothing for those in need. This year, we successfully gathered donations in cities such as Nashville, TN; Philadelphia, PA; Greensboro, NC; Chicago, IL; and Charlotte, NC, helping to keep vulnerable community members warm during the winter months.

In addition, our bi-monthly “HBCU Strong Day of Service” initiative allows our coaches to engage directly with local students. Recently, we provided free haircuts and nail painting for students in Chicago, IL, creating a positive and uplifting environment that fosters self-esteem and community spirit.

We also partner with local middle schools in Greensboro, NC, through our “Lunch Buddies” program, where we connect with students during their lunch breaks. This initiative offers guidance, support, and mentorship, allowing us to answer their questions and inspire them to pursue their dreams.

To celebrate important causes, HBCU Strong hosts events such as the “Empower Her 5K” for Women’s History Month, which not only promotes fitness but also empowers women in our communities. We also conduct annual mental health panels during Mental Health Awareness Month, fostering important conversations around mental well-being. Furthermore, our commitment to breast cancer awareness is highlighted through an annual 5K event that raises funds for the Pretty in Pink Foundation, with our donations increasing each year.

At HBCU Strong, we take great pride in providing unforgettable fitness experiences while recognizing that our true impact comes from giving back to the communities we serve. We are dedicated to uplifting those around us, understanding that together, we can create a brighter future for all.Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
If I were to describe HBCU Strong in three words, they would be energizing, engaging, and motivating! HBCU Strong is more than just a fitness organization; it provides a safe space for individuals seeking to improve not only their physical health but also their mental and spiritual well-being. What sets us apart is our unique business model, which transcends the typical gym or fitness program. With coaches located across the country, we prioritize empowering our coaches to eventually launch their own businesses. As the owner, I recognize the potential in each coach we hire, and I am committed to helping them grow and develop their personal brands, which in turn strengthens HBCU Strong.

I take immense pride in the fact that HBCU Strong began as a small workout class on the campus of North Carolina A&T State University and has evolved into a national fitness powerhouse recognized for its impact. We have been able to sustain this growth for over five years, and I never anticipated that we would reach this level of success. Yet, I believe we are just at the beginning of our journey, and I am genuinely excited about our future.

One of the most significant milestones for us recently has been the addition of our first Board of Directors. This is a game changer for HBCU Strong, as the Board will address corporate matters that I previously managed alone. Their diverse perspectives and expertise will not only propel the company forward but also create a culture of change and innovation.

Throughout this journey, I have learned that you cannot do it all by yourself. As the saying goes, “If the dream is small enough for you to handle alone, you are not dreaming big enough.” This quote resonates deeply with me, emphasizing that HBCU Strong is growing well beyond my individual capacity. Our sustainability over the past five years can be attributed to the power of partnership. We actively seek collaborations with local businesses and organizations to ensure we make a lasting impact on the communities we serve.

Maintaining this business for over five years has not been without its challenges. We overcame obstacles by keeping God at the center of our mission and seeking help when needed. I am never hesitant to ask for guidance when navigating the next steps for the company. It’s crucial for me to remember why I started this journey: my genuine love for fitness and helping others. On tough days, when attendance or trainee retention may not meet expectations, I remind myself to show up for those who continue to show up for HBCU Strong.

I want the world to know that HBCU Strong is a brand for everyone. We believe that anyone can prioritize their health and well-being, and we strive to create an enjoyable environment that makes this vital decision easier. At HBCU Strong, we celebrate each step toward personal growth, making fitness a fun and integral part of life.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Day 1: Arrival and Alpha Land Gym Once my friend settles in, our first stop would be Alpha Land Gym. This world-class facility is a paradise for fitness enthusiasts, and I fell in love with it the first time I visited. I would take them through an invigorating workout session, showcasing the gym’s impressive amenities and vibrant atmosphere.

Day 2: I would take my friend to Seismique Interactive Museum. This is a great place for friends to go and use each other to get through the mazes.

Day 3: On this day we would go to Post Houston is a mixed-use environment combining arts, entertainment, creative workspaces, dining and retails.

Day 4: Fitness and Chill Day
We’d dedicate this day to wellness. We could start with a morning yoga class at a local studio, such as YogaWorks. Afterward, we’d enjoy brunch at the Breakfast Klub. The blackowned historic spot is a Houston staple that every one needs to experience.

Day 5: We would go bar hopping at Playground, Prospect Park, Kamp and then we would get late night Pizza at Franks.

These are some of the places I would take my friends to have a great time! Only thing I would tell them is never leave Houston on a Sunday! Sunday Funday is a must!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to give a heartfelt shoutout to my family and friends, as I truly believe that I am nothing without their unwavering support and encouragement. My family has poured so much into my life, instilling the confidence I need to keep pushing forward.

I want to particularly highlight my dad, who has been a profound influence since my earliest days. He exemplifies what it means to be a real man, demonstrating integrity and strength throughout his life. His steadfast faith in God and our family has been a guiding light for me. I deeply admire his dedication to fitness; without his influence, I might never have pursued a career as a personal trainer or taken my own fitness journey seriously. To this day, his commitment to staying fit continues to inspire me.

My mom is an incredible pillar of strength and support. She has not only been there for me emotionally but has also provided invaluable business ideas and guidance over the years. My company would not be what it is today without her insights and encouragement.

My siblings also play a crucial role in my life, constantly encouraging me to strive for greatness. They recognize that I have not yet reached my fullest potential and motivate me to keep pushing forward.

Additionally, my friends are the foundation upon which HBCU Strong stands. Without the village of friends surrounding me, I might never have started HBCU Strong, let alone sustained it for over five years. Their love and support keep me grounded and motivated, assuring me that HBCU Strong will continue to thrive as a business built on love, sustained by community support, and powered by a meaningful impact.
