We had the good fortune of connecting with Roderick & Makai Walker and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Roderick & Makai, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
The most important factor behind our success is being true to who we are. We make products that we love and we want to share them with others. As our daughter learned she had dietary restrictions we worked to develop baked goods that tasted good that still met her lifestyle changes. The same thing with Roderick, as he worked to lose weight we started to develop a keto/gluten-free line that created options that made it possible for him to get healthy and he embraced what worked for him to share with the customers. We bake real products that provide options that many felt were no possible with their lifestyle changes. Our customers have come to know us for our consistency, our customer service, and our flavor profile! We love being a part of so many people’s journeys!

What should our readers know about your business?
Our brand is like other brands as we saw a need and we hoped to fulfill it. Our story differs as it has a personal impact on everyone in our family. We have favorites we have created and changes in our lifestyles that we realized others would enjoy. We are excited when we find someone on their journey and they say I had given up n finding anything good since I made this change and this has made me realize that I have options.

Getting to where we are today was by no means easy. Finding a place that would let a six-year-old bake and coming up with the money to pay for a place is a challenge. It is truly a challenge and something that requires planning and budgeting to make it happen. It also requires a level of effort that can be challenging to maintain especially with such a young family.

We have overcome the challenges together, even our son has taught us things that we need to do. Kai when a mistake happens will look to what we did before we had an issue taking things back to basics. It is never easy and we seem to always have to take the road less traveled to make things work.

We are a dedicated group all working together truly a family-owned small business determined to provide the best service and products to our customers. Our dedication to what we do is what keeps us going, and whenever we are having a bad day, we smile when someone tells us that they enjoyed our products or they share how we have been a part of their success. Its our people that keeps us going!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Our favorite spots in the city revolve around our favorite family activities. We love going to the waterparks in Galveston or where we find one. You will understand once you feel how hot it gets here in the summer. We enjoy several places to eat including Nyammings Fusion Bistro, Brothers Taco’s, and various food trucks and small businesses across the city. There are a lot of local options that will tantalize your taste buds

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
We would like to thank Makai’s Mom, without her none of this would be possible. She has helped to take Kai’s dream into reality and she is the vision of our company. She is always planning and working to create opportunities and working behind the scenes designing the brand and keeping the business moving forward. It may sound cliche but we could not do this without her!
