We had the good fortune of connecting with Rodney Butler and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Rodney, what do you want people to remember about you?
Of course, like most artist, I’d like to be remembered for having the coolest and sometimes most thought-provoking art they ever seen. But I think my true legacy will be one of service to up incoming artist. I’m the kind of artist that believes in encouraging and teaching any artist anything and everything I know. I believe all my knowledge and techniques where not just designed to be passed to me but, through me to other artist.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
The only thing that I can think of that sets me apart from another Artist. Is Me, the way I think and communicate, the colors I see, the way I build, my whole process of creating and what I use to create with.
I’m most proud of or excited about the future and how my Artistic abilities and opportunities are growing.
To be honest I believe kindness and communication got me where I am today professionally.
It isn’t easy sometimes, because let’s face it, people be peopling. But I found it’s best to try and stay positive and don’t internalize others negativity.
I learned you will never get anywhere if you don’t get out there. Your art will never get the fame, money or respect you want if you don’t get out and talk to the people. Social media will never be as good as seeing it in person and talking to the artist.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
My best friends are simple homebodies and introverts like me, so we wouldn’t go to many public places in town I could think of. But here are some places, I would definitely take them.
Cool Runnings Jamaican Bar & Grill
Bubba’s Texas Burger Shack
The Silo’s at Sawyer Yard, along with all the other Buildings.
Hardy and Nance Studios
POST Houston
The Improv
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
It’s so many to choose from because so many people have help me get it here. I tell people I’m only as at good as my art friends that have shared there knowledge and techniques with me. So outside of my friends and family supports, the Art community I affiliate with across Texas, I would like to give special Shout out to Mitch Cohen and the 1st Saturday Art Market for giving me my first opportunity to show / sell my work. Also three amazing Artist I currently consider to be my Mentors, Alvin Roy (Houston, TX), Eddie Filer (Texas City, TX) and Ernest Vincent Wood III (Wichita, KS), These men are actively helping me take my Art to levels I wouldn’t have ever imaged.
