We had the good fortune of connecting with Rosaly Acosta and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Rosaly, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I believe that different people have different interests in life. There are some people who like the idea of creating different businesses with different concepts, while there are others who like to manage a unique concept or idea. I am of the first kind.
I started my first business idea when I was 19 years old, the expectation of freedom and a fearless soul taught me resilience, making this thought process very simple. I have lead a few startups over the course of my life. Some were successful and some were not, maybe more failure than success, hahaha!. But the whole idea of creating from the ground up is what excites me and motivates me the most. Connecting with new ideas, people, and cultures refines my art and life as an artist.
I started with an idea to meet the needs of a niche, doing research and connecting with the right people (be patient with this part, takes time). Taking risks and consistency are the key to success, you just have to put your mind to it. That’s a no brainer.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Simple and such a cliche to say I’m an artist that loves what I do. I’m a director, film editor, and creator. Award-winning with more than a decade of cinematography experience within the Caribbean film industry. In 2015, I won the Best Editor recognition for the film La Gunguna, from Premios La Silla granted by the Asociación Dominicana de Profesionales de la Industria del Cine (ADOCINE), Dominican Republic. Also, a co-founder member of The Creative Block collective working and exploring art to connect with our identity with art shows, films and much more, co- founder of Colectivo Colibrí a feminist non-profit organization dedicated to educating Latin women through art in Houston TX , Co-founder and member of OneSample Media a video production company.
I think the most valuable lesson for me is persistence and passion. Become your own hero and inspiration.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’m an introvert that loves good movies and poetry, enjoying places full of good energy and good vibes. One of my favorite places to go is The Gypsy Poet Live poetry, open-mic sessions and pizza place, hanging with friends, love the vibe on Rooftop Cinema Club Uptown and having a lot of close friends and musicians gives me the privilege to enjoy life at any space or house.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Wow, it is difficult, This journey was built by an army of artists, friends, mentors, and moments, It would fill my soul to mention my favorite director Ernesto Alemany a Dominican film director of my second and very successful film “La Gunguna” 2015 we still so close. He teaches me how to be resilient and unapologetic with my art. My lifelong mentor, the famous Puerto Rican film director Raúl Marchand Sánchez with his experience, sensitivity, and passion for films taught me a big lesson in business and life, he said: If your film doesn’t touch your soul and moves your emotion, your film is a waste. And my partner and colleague Miguel Silva, with his wisdom and temper, has become my soul’s support and inspiration.
