We had the good fortune of connecting with Russell Montgomery and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Russell, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I started my own business because I wanted to work with my hands in a way that no one else in Houston was doing at the time. Knife making is a very niche business and in order to pursue it, I had to create something new. I chose to do this in a new way, one that I couldn’t find anywhere, not only making high quality knives by hand, but also sharpening and refurbishing customer’s knives.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
One of the things that sets us apart is that we are full service knife shop. We aren’t a kitchen store selling knives, we are a knife shop selling and working on knives. We offer fully handmade knives, and we also sell manufactured and handmade Japanese knives in addition to pocket knives. You can bring in any type of knife for service whether that is for a simple sharpening or a full refurbishment.
We got where we are today by constantly learning, doing new things, listening to our customers, and simply pursuing excellent knives, both in house and externally.
I would like people to know how much care and attention we put into making and sourcing high quality knives and knife accessories.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Houston has an amazing food culture the first place I’d take a friend to Neo HTX, Paulo does an amazing sushi omakase, it is simply one the best meals you can have. I’d have to take them to the Galleria, because its the Galleria and you should just see it at least once. If we can catch a pop up with Khoi BBQ while they are here, it is the best. Don does a very special fusion of Texas and Vietnamese flavors and dishes. For a proper Mexican meal I’d go to Teotihuacan, absolutely excellent traditional food.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My wife, Elizabeyta, deserves all the credit for getting me started in knife making, and for making it into a business. I was looking for something to do with my hands not only did she suggest knife making, but she also found a workshop for me to go to, to help get me started on my journey!
