We had the good fortune of connecting with Ryan Langford and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ryan, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Making a career change in your 40’s can be a challenge. When I think about risk, often I think it is the risks that we don’t take that we regret the most. Everyone’s propensity for risk is different. Writing a song and showing it to someone for feedback can feel like a risk. For many, standing on stage and singing in front of people is a risk. Launching a new career is a risk. Purchasing an investment property is a risk.
As we assess risk, we can do ourselves a favor by thinking beyond what we see at the moment. Take a deeper look into what our goals are for the future. What if we began to consider, and take steps towards, what we wanted our retirement to look like when we were in our 20’s? What if we approached everything we do with the “end goal” in mind?
This could be the key to unlock the hold of fear and take the necessary risks to achieve our goals.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Real Estate is a daily Counseling/Therapy session for the Realtor. As an agent you learn so much about yourself through the process of helping people. I love hearing the stories and journey of families, which enable me to understand their needs and become a value in helping them get their home!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
We moved to Houston almost 13 years ago. This city has some of the best food anywhere! I have definitely become a bit of a foodie.
Some of our favorite spots include:
Brenner’s on the Bayou – Get away in the City
Coltivare – Italian in the Heights! So good!
West End Coffee – Cool Vibe
Naam Khao – Best Thai in Houston
Anthonie’s Market – Outdoor Vibe in the Middle of Nowhere
Top Sushi – Yum
Uchi – Yum Yum.
Killens BBQ – the best Beef ribs.
Ready Room – Music & Drinks
The Rustic – Live music
Breakfast Club – Chicken & Waffles
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
In my mid forties I changed careers. I launched into the Real Estate industry as a full time Realtor. Diving into a “commission only” based income after 20 years of being on a staff with a salary position is wild. It has been one of the most personally challenging things I have ever accomplished. I have been forced to grow and conquer my fears and insecurities in new and unique ways. Unfortunately as humans, we may tend to avoid situations or challenges in our daily life that force personal growth. However, you quickly discover Real Estate is one business that requires you to get better every single day. You must face the truth about yourself. You must discover what daily habits or actions prohibit you from being successful. It honestly is therapy or counseling in disguise.
It would be impossible to make such a life changing career change without the complete support of my wife Amanda. She has given me the encouragement and freedom to pursue a new path forward. Without her strong belief in me, my journey would look completely different.
The first brokerage I joined was a small boutique brokerage: Connected Realty. Joining this team was the best thing I could have done to launch into this new field. As brokers at Connected Realty, Anderson, Oliver, and Jonathan provided the training and mentorship that helped me understand how to build a business, and how to become the best person and realtor I could be. I learned so much from the people at Connected Realty. I would not still be in Real Estate without these relationships. I am forever grateful.
This year I joined the team at Coldwell Banker Realty – Bellaire Office. Beth Dreyer has helped me take the training I had and maximize my productivity for further success. Beth’s commitment to integrity, value, and a family environment has made the Coldwell training and continued education a perfect home for my business. I am learning new ways to provide additional value to my clients, making their home buying/selling experience the best ever.
