We had the good fortune of connecting with Sabrina Holder and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sabrina, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I treat risk as God’s way of building my character, and faith. Which are two very important things to have when on the road to success. Risk is not meant to be comfortable, or safe. Taking risks has shaped my life and career tremendously. When I went to Old Dominion University, I was studying to be an Arabic translator for the government/international relations. In 2011, that all changed. I was introduced to the music & entertainment industry. I then took a risk and changed my major from International Relations to Communication. I began working at Sirius XM Satellite Radio, as a board operator than promoted to producer for talk & programming. Then I decided to take another risk. Between 2013 and 2017, my photography business was growing. I also spoke to my husband, Quinelle “Coach Q” Holder, who I co-founded our agency (Medium Creative Agency) with, and shared with him that it was time for us to really go in full force with our agency. And he agreed that me quitting a 9-5 in radio was the next risk to take. I did, and those first 6 months I kept thinking “What did I just do…” Everything was falling apart, and it seemed like I made a horrible decision. But then after those 6 months, my risk turned into a reward. Now we are blessed with successful businesses, and are continuing to take risks and grow each year.Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am a photographer and love it! What sets me apart from most, is that I love to get to know my clients and really build the photoshoot around their specific needs. What also sets me apart, is that I don’t just stick to one specific topic. I have done live concerts (where I started), editorial, portraits, weddings, product, and lifestyle photography. I am most proud of two photo exhibits I curated (featuring all my photos) for a festival in Washington, DC and for Sean “Diddy” Combs’ Bad Boy Reunion Tour in Washington, DC. It was extremely difficult, since I was not well known and had to prove myself to the “big dogs”. I overcame these challenges by having my support system (my husband) who was there for emotional and business support. I also overcame these challenges by just going through it and learning from my mistakes. I want the world to know that I am a self taught photographer, who started by watching YouTube videos. Then actually going out there and learning through trial & error in 2009. I started out by doing free work at first, and was ready to start from the bottom. If people knew how many times I was broke, or had no possible way to get credentials…they would be shocked, because in the end I was able to work with so many great names and capture great artists (I.e. Jadakiss, Kendrick Lamar, Karen Civil, etc.). If you really want it bad, and willing to do whatever it took to prove you can work hard…then it’ll happen for you.Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My mother and my husband are two people who deserve all the shoutouts, credit and recognition for my story. My mom taught me at a young age how to make money doing absolutely anything! To never stop learning, and always try to do it yourself. She is also a small business owner herself (a physical trainer & nutritionist). My husband, Quinelle “Coach Q” Holder, is the major reason I even completed college (after I dropped out twice). He is the major reason why I continue to push myself as an entrepreneur. He is constantly teaching me how to handle business, and how to never sell my self short.
