We had the good fortune of connecting with Sade Perkins and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sade, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
The Freedmen’s Town Farmers Market happens to be located in Houston’s oldest African American neighborhood. Founded right after emancipation. Unfortunately it is also a food desert. Our goal is to hi-light the amazing history of Freedmen’s Town while providing its residents with a weekly healthy grocery option to shop with local farmers, gardeners and entrepreneurs.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
What sets Freedmen’s Town Farmers Market apart from other markets and pop up shop is that we’re a weekly farmers market dedicated to servicing the food desert of Freedmen’s Town fourth ward Houston. It certainly hasn’t been easy but the rewards have been great! We’ve managed to service our community while also nurturing small black businesses by helping to generate approximately $250,000 in economic activity this past year. The Freedmen’s Town Farmers Market has played a vital role in preserving and extending southern black food ways by providing black farmers and cattle ranchers in the surrounding Houston area a venue to sell what they’ve produced.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would start our morning with a bike n brunch tour ride with third ward bike tours. Then spend our afternoon checking out local art at the Hardy & Nance studio. We would grab lunch and do a little shopping at the Freedmen’s Town Farmers Market and then head over to the downtown food haul for drinks and dinner.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to dedicate my shoutout to my wonderful supportive boyfriend Dr. Colin Bossen who gave me the courage and inspiration to start my farmers market business.
