We had the good fortune of connecting with Sakara Ross and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sakara, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
I’d have to say that legacy is the most important factor behind my success. SNR Construction is a family owned business based in Houston, Texas. Our company was inspired by my late grandfather who was a carpenter in the late 1940’s. In partnership with my father our vision was to create a company honoring his entrepreneurial spirit and craftsmanship. Shortly after the launch of our business, I lost my father and business partner. It became my mission to create a legacy to honor both of them. SNR Construction strives for excellence and has become a strong contender in the industry. Leaving a legacy for others to follow is what drives me. I’ve followed those who have gone before me and I’m making sure that those who come after me will have a path to follow as well.
What should our readers know about your business?
SNR Construction is a woman owned construction company based in Houston, Texas. To commercial and residential clients, we provide drywall, painting, and civil inspection services with competitive pricing, quality materials and exceptional quality of work. Our team has the in-depth training necessary to capture our client’s vision and exceed their expectations. I’m proud that I’ve been able to build lasting relationships that have allowed me to create jobs and opportunities for others. It has not been an easy process and I have experienced many challenges thus far, but having a strong network of mentors and industry experts has helped. One of the lessons that I’ve learned is that sometimes just showing up is half the battle. There have been times that I’ve allowed fear to influence my decisions and potentially caused me to miss out on opportunities. You don’t have to know all of the answers but as long as you show up, you will be surprised at the doors that continue to open. I want the world to know that there is a great purpose behind my brand and it’s my goal to have continued growth, becoming a Billion Dollar company creating jobs in multiple states across the US.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my best friend was coming to visit, our first stop would be brunch at Grace’s on Kirby. They have the best food and drinks in the city! Most of my friends are art lovers so I would take her to check out the Houston Museum of African American Culture and the Houston Museum of Fine Arts. At some point we would go hang out in the River Oaks district and possibly catch a movie at IPic or have a drink at Toulouse Cafe and Bar. Towards the end of the week I would book us for a spa day at the Post Oak hotel and hang out by the pool as the weekend approaches. I consider myself to be a spa enthusiast, The Post Oak Hotel has the most amazing spa in the City.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I definitely would not be successful without the support of my family and friends. They challenge me and never allow me to become complacent. A few of my girlfriends are entrepreneurs like myself and they inspire me to stay the course. Shateria Moragne- El- Owner of Front Row Clothing, Sigail Currie- Owner of Wax on Vine candles, and Ashley Ollison – Owner of Skii Boutique. Each one of these lady’s leadership, strength, and creativity is what I am fueled by. It helps that they can relate to some of the obstacles that I face being a small business owner. We always encourage and uplift one another, they are truly my sister circle. I would also have to recognize Ascend Houston as being part of my continued success. Ascend Houston is a two-year program designed to help minority contractors in the Greater Houston metro area develop sustainable growth through job creation and contribute to the post Hurricane Harvey housing rehabilitation of their neighborhoods. This organization has given me a wonderful network of contractors like myself to collaborate with. There is no way one can achieve success without the support of others and I’m grateful for these individuals.
