We had the good fortune of connecting with Salma Khetani and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Salma, what role has risk played in your life or career?
When I decided to quit my job and start my own business, it was a huge risk. I had no idea how it would turn out without any formal training. I was just depending on my research in library ,watching you tube, tv shows, and trail and error in my kitchen at home. I am not a social person either, so marketing and building a clientele network was another challenge. I took a leap of faith and just went for it. I still take risks everyday by trying new techniques and experimenting with new flavors. When someone comes with a thought , a vision, or what their dream cake is, it’s a challenge for me and i love it. It gives me opportunity to learn new techniques and I trust myself to execute them.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My determination to never give up. Most people think you need a degree or formal education in particular field to succeed. I never had the opportunity to attend college and yet, i’m more successful than i could have hoped to be. It was not easy for me to balance work and family at first. I learned the hard way, it’s ok to make mistakes. Accept it, learn from it, and keep going. I was able to find the balance by evaluating every decision more holistically. I love what i do!! I chose this field because it gives me freedom to express myself. It gives me so much satisfaction in creating something unique and bringing little sweetness to peoples lives.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
There are so many places in Texas!!! we can start with food since houston is known for its food. My favorite breakfast place in snooze!!! love their sweet potato pancakes. since i love nature i would go to bayou bend, museum district, selfie pop-up museum and how can I forget discovery green. we can take a tour of best bite in houston, enjoy drinks at Mcintyre” or Cherrybarhtx . I also like to go to hookah bars like cafe Mawal. or enjoy Indian Thali at Maharaja Bhog, Indian chinese at Alings in sugarland, Brazilian steak house at Chama Gaucha.
Shop at some pop up small boutiques
I would go to Austin for couple of days, there we can hike, bike, paddle board and in evening go to congress ave and 6th street and yes can’t forget to mention desserts at manolis they are the best!!!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to give a big shoutout to my family, friends without their support it wouldn’t have been possible. most importantly positive feedback and word-of-mouth marketing through my clientele. I love them all Thank you!!!
