Meet Sara & Beau Blackard | Owners, Feathered Forest Hunt Club

We had the good fortune of connecting with Sara & Beau Blackard and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sara & Beau, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Beau and I come from a long line of entrepreneurs on each side of our family, and I believe that is where our thought process subconsciously began. We grew up watching our parents and grandparents start businesses from scratch and learned various methods of leadership along the way. After we each graduated from college, we took career paths that gave us the experience and knowledge to eventually feel confident in running our own business. Our twenties and thirties were for growing, learning, and working hard to figure out our path. After turning 40, we realized that our work experience created a great team between us, and we know how to come up with an idea and execute. After 16 years of marriage, we also know where we each excel and areas of opportunity. We both love the outdoors and Beau is an avid hunter – we wanted something long term to possibly pass down to our son as well, thus the Feathered Forest Hunt Club was born.
 

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Our business fills a need in the Greater Houston area with regard to hunting and the outdoors. Land is becoming limited, especially hunting land. Adults and children are attached to their electronics, and a need is out there to show the next generation there is more to life than social media and pop culture. We started the Feathered Forest Hunt Club because we love the outdoors, and realize people need a place to getaway for a day or even a few hours that is convenient to where they live as well. The Feathered Forest Hunt Club offers all of these things, and we are so excited about that. Beau and I have both run separate businesses in the past and have learned there are days that are extremely difficult; however, the fact that we are in this together helps give us the confidence and support that we need to keep driving forward. We understand we aren’t perfect, and you learn something each day. Fun fact, we are both an Enneagram 3, and although each day isn’t perfection and sunshine, we understand each other’s strengths and weaknesses, and make a great team in marriage and business.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Oh this is a fun question! Beau is a Houstonian born and raised, I grew up in Dallas but have lived in Houston for almost 20 years. Here are a few of our favorite things to do depending on the time of year.

Places to visit: Minute Maid Park (Go Astros!!), the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo and we love going to the BBQ cook-off, Galveston for beach fun, Kemah for the boardwalk, Sam Houston National Forest, NASA, Blue Bell Factory in Brenham, catch a Texans game at NRG, bring them to the Feathered Forest Hunt Club of course for a quail & pheasant hunt!

Places to eat & drink in Houston: The Heights (we used to live here before we had a child and absolutely love the Heights- tons of bars and shops on 19th St, Cedar Creek was our favorite local hang-out. Steak – Pappas Steak House or Taste of Texas, Mexican – Hugo’s, Lupe Tortilla, Pappasitos or El Tiempo, Seafood – Goode Company Seafood or Landry’s,

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
As mentioned in our story, our parents are the greatest role models, mentors and supporters of all time. We are so lucky that the two of us grew up in families that celebrated entrepreneurship, hard work, education, and fun. Their genuine love and support gives each of us the confidence to succeed in whatever choice we make in life. Life is all about balance between faith, family, and work, and our parents truly led by example. They are inspiring and we are so thankful for their continued support and mentorship.
