We had the good fortune of connecting with Sara Rojas and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sara, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I have worked since I was very young, but starting my own business in a country that was not mine, with a language that I did not speak and did not understand was my biggest challenge, the language was my main barrier and although I understood little, it was not enough. .. Learning to speak the English language has been the most difficult thing to this day and although my clients and friends are very patient with me, it frustrates me that I cannot communicate my ideas fluently
But this, more than stopping me, motivates me to continue learning and to talk about the difficulty of leaving one country and arriving in another without understanding anything, but even so, no goal is impossible to achieve.
Every day, my entrepreneurship shows me new challenges, from which I try to learn and improve. I believe that there is no better way to stand out in life than the experience that problems and difficulties give you and the way you go through them.
I remember that when I started my business I couldn’t close many sales because I couldn’t explain the production process of our products in English, this was something that really made me lose confidence in myself and in the business that was just starting.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
My business is an extension of myself, of the person I am and my roots. It is a unique business where I have a bit of my family here even though they are far away. My family is the creator of most of the pieces that we sell in our store and the talavera (Mexican pottery) that we make represents our culture and many years of experience and learning that have passed on from one generation to another of art and entrepreneurship, our store it connects not only our family but also two countries.
I am happy that people can enjoy “a little piece of Mexico” in Texas and that it makes them remember those memories that many people have of their vacations, of their family, of grandmothers who collected Mexican pieces or even of what it was your home in Mexico.
Coming to our store is not only visiting a ”place” but living a whole experience of a Mexican market
Also, did you know that you can visit our workshop in Guanajuato, Mexico?
It makes me proud that people can buy pieces that have been made with love, experience and care and not just machine-made pieces,
it is literally ”from our hands to yours” as our slogan says.
And no, it has not been easy to be part of people’s favorite stores, doing what we do requires a lot of professionalism and knowledge of our own roots and the artisan pieces we make.
Some people came to my first pop up markets to make rude or even racist comments about my origin and the pieces we create. I have never taken these comments personally, on the contrary, they motivate me to tell people more about our products. how we create them, what processes we do to finish the pieces and even offer personalized products to our customers!
We love that customers are interested in knowing the origin of their pieces and the story behind them. I emphasize that I don’t just sell, I share a part of me, of what I am in each piece.
My store is now linked to many people, where every home that has one of our pieces is also “A little piece of Mexico” and I love it!
I am truly grateful to the customers that have made us one of the favorite stores in our small town, Brenham here in Texas and that makes us stand out from the rest! For me it is a blessing that magazines like Shoutout give us a space to tell my story and reach more people, because that is what makes a small business bigger; the support of the people and our community.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
In Washington County there are many hidden gems and small businesses that I think people should know more about! My first place to visit without a doubt is downtown Brenham, where you can find everything from food, museums and places to buy small gifts.
But as a lover of social media, the first thing I suggest is to visit all the murals around Downtown, they are the perfect space for incredible photos to share on your Instagram
Downtown Brenham offers a very large variety of restaurants where if you plan a weeklong trip you have at least one restaurant to visit every day, from Latin American food (my favorite) to hamburgers and tacos and even spaces from the most elegant bars I’ve ever seen in small towns like Brenham.
My favorite spot at the moment to eat is ” Las Americas Latin Cuisine” but if you want a more ”Texan experience” I will highly recommend a BBQ place as Pioneer SmokeHouse but honestly around the area all BBQ places are great!
And since I know that after walking and eating my body is going to ask for something sweet, the famous Blue Bell ice cream parlor cannot be missing! It is one of my favorite and kid-friendly places.
For fun nights with live music sometimes, I encourage people to visit Grapevine on Main in Chappell Hill or BVBrewing this is fantastic if you have kids! Like the Charro T Mexican Restaurant, ideal for listening to music, having fun with the whole family; or if you want something quieter, Brenham has many parks where you can enjoy calm and relaxing walks or a visit to the downtown art gallery!
Brenham has a lot of unique places that offer not only a service but an experience and that is what I love about this small town, each small business represents the magic of a family, a person and a united community
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
When someone asks me who have been the people who have supported and helped me the most during my business process, a mental picture of my family comes to me, without a doubt they have been the support of my business and of me, especially my daughter. Sofia who motivates me every day to be a better version of myself in all aspects, professional, personal and much more.
And to them, the Rojas Gonzalez family is the people I want to dedicate this shoutout to and all the successes I can have.
As you can see, the family for me is the strongest base of all. And many small businesses around have grown and contributed a lot to the community like Carrina with The Carrina Show Who does video blogs and commercials to help other small businesses get local recognition, Top Floor Cars Brenham is another great new contribution to downtown. with a business that stands out on its own. Another good example is Brenham Quality Meat Market! where the unity of the family makes a small business stand out from the rest and many local people can see it
