We had the good fortune of connecting with Sarah Skrobarczyk and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sarah, do you have any habits that you feel contribute to your effectiveness?
I believe the most important habit that has helped me succeed is consistency.
Deciding to do something and just showing up is half the battle won. When you decide to do something it is a commitment to yourself. When you show up for the work your brain is rewarded with that accomplishment. Than internal reinforcement helps you show up the next time which over time gets stuff done. Folks are busy with life and I am no different but when I consistently decide to do something and show up to do it, even if I only have 20 minutes or an hour, things get done. Maybe slower than the next person or company does it, but if I worry about them, I am not getting my stuff handled. I believe consistency is what has helped me the most. You might hear this trait in yourself referred to as persistent, stubborn, or even headstrong. Those words do not always carry the best connotations but when you own them and harness them to propel your business forward you can accomplish amazing things! So lets be consistent, persistent, stubborn, headstrong, or any other number of words for the same trait and get out there show up for ourselves and our businesses and ROCK this world!
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I run Stardust Entertainment, LLC which hosts Delta H Con, an annual Anime and Gaming Convention, in Houston Texas. Today it may seem odd that I call out anime AND gaming but 15 years ago when I started the convention Anime was in its own convention and gaming was the same. Today you will still find major gaming conventions that focus solely on gaming but there are very few anime conventions that do not have more than a nod to gaming. Over the years Anime conventions have given bigger and bigger percentages of their floor space to games. To be fair in that time games have given bigger and bigger focus to anime themed products. Mutual industry growth. I like to think being a forerunner to this trend that gaming has a cohesive inclusion in our convention. We consistently strive to be industry forerunners. One year it might be the types of events we include, another it could be as small as how we present our schedule. One day I would love to be a convention name known around the world but till then I’ll be happy knowing we are making changes one little feature at a time. I am most proud that we are still here 15 years later. Many people start conventions and find out they are a lot of work, they take a lot of people to pull off, and they are not cheap to produce. Over the years I’ve seen many heartbreaking things for our community. I do not want to discourage new businesses, but it is vitally important to understand what you are getting into. No business is easy, anyone telling you that it is lying. My road to 15 years would probably have been easier with partners, but if I had gone with any of the partners I was originally looking at the company would not be here at all today. I continuously evaluate the options and just keep making choices. You grow with the goods ones, you learn from the bad ones and pray those don’t tank your hard work.
Delta H Con is a labor of love for me and my staff. I love the community we have built. I love seeing the first generation, if you will, come back with their family. The 10 year olds from our very first convention are now bringing their spouses and their children. It is always wonderful when someone I met at the convention in our early years greets me on the floor and reminds me that our community has gotten larger but the warm caring family atmosphere hasn’t been lost. I hope we never outgrow the caring for our fellow convention goer. The family friendly atmosphere we strive to create. I just love the energy of our convention floor. We always welcome new people so come check out our family!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
In no particulate order I would definitely visit the water wall it is a visually beautiful place with nice paths to walk down. Knowing my friends a trip to the Houston Art Museum is also a must. Depending on the time of year we would check out the Asia Society Texas Center here in Houston. They put on awesome events throughout the year.
For food Randy’s Smokehouse & BBQ on highway 3 is some of the best BBQ I’ve found we either get that catered for the show or take folks down there when they arrive early or stay past the show. So feeding it to my friends is a hands down no-brainer! My other favorite eatery in town is Komeya Ramen and Sushi down in Webster.
I don’t drink so bars are not my thing.
If my best friend was here to visit mostly we would just hang out at my place playing games, watching anime, or just talking.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My family has been my biggest support over the years. They haven’t always agreed with me but they has always been there to help. Be it watching my kids so I can go off to work. Stopping by the house and feeding the dog while I’m out of town for a few days. To even helping me prep for and run my conventions. I know I would absolutely NOT be where I am today without my family.
