We had the good fortune of connecting with Sasha Cox and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sasha, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
I have made it my mission to put family first. Not only for myself, but as an example for those who work with me and for me. Without this balance of family, selfcare, and health… burn out can occur. I experienced this as a Director of Disaster Recovery at a local nonprofit. You would think this type of service to the community would be very rewarding. In many ways it was, and I enjoyed empowering residents to manage their home repairs, stand up for under-resourced communities, and help create laws to protect them. What I missed out at that time was my greatest mission, my family. Those closest to you are the one to feel it most when you are out of balance. I was never “present” with them. Mind always on a work project. I had to step away from that position to better serve them and myself.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
You know what’s needed yet not sexy? … processes and procedures. This is where my talents are and what most companies and organizations need. I have the ability to think big picture yet put these dreams into achievable, sustainable, and scalable practices. It’s one thing to have an idea and be a hard worker, it’s another to add others into the mix and make it profitable. I am able to work with dreams to create a flow to achieve goals.
One of my passions is to see others meet their potential. You set a goal; I’ll empower you to make it happen. There is really nothing you can’t do if you plan far enough ahead.
I have found myself pushing staff past their wants. Thats always a hard lesson, but useful. Not everyone wants to use all of their skills toward success. Some don’t want to leave their comfort zone, others have family restrictions, and (honestly) some don’t want to put in the work. In the end, its each person’s own path. They have to decide what’s right for them and I respect that.
I create a lot of my success by starting at the end. Sounds funny, but you have to know the end result before you can begin, I create a dream/vision. I see what it would take to make it happen. I’ll set a timeline, budget, material list, employee power needed, etc. Then I get to work. I keep going and take as many setbacks as I need to in order to get to the end.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
A great way to enjoy Houston is by taking a guided bike tour. There are many to choose from. Some are focused on architecture, parks, and even a bar crawl. You can learn a lot about the city.
I’m a pop culture gal and really enjoy The Alamo Draft House. New and old films are shown. It has a great atmosphere with good food. A unique movie spot to bring your date is The Rooftop Cinema Club, Its stationed outside at the top of a parking garage. It has a 50’s-yard party feel.
When I plan outings with the family, I focus on seasons. Typhoon Texas in Katy is a great waterpark for the summer. I enjoy it because its small and close to the mall, eateries, etc.
Fall and spring we visit Nasa and the Museum district. Typically, nice weather and always something fun to learn.
In Winter there is a long list of activities around the city, but we are a wrestling family and typically only see the inside of gyms. One of our favorite things is to drive though all the subdivisions around Houston and look at lights.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would have no path without the Holy Spirit leading me from within. Guiding my motives and priories. He leads me through the support of my husband, kids, family, and friends.
