We had the good fortune of connecting with Savanna Stephens and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Savanna, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Honestly, it was something that I’ve always had on my heart and I was in the planning process to make it happen but I was actually forced to start. I was terminated two days before Christmas and right before I was getting ready to leave for vacation. I was devastated because I had given my all to that job but instead of being worried, I went on the vacation, enjoyed myself with my daughters, and took some time to clear my head and plan for what was next.

My business became so much more personal, I needed to make it happen!
I wanted to not only be a place of service for my clients but I wanted to create an experience and place where there was no judgment. A place where it wasn’t just about the money but a place where people know I care and they’re going to get what they came for plus more. My line of work isn’t for everyone but it’s important to the ones who get it. I love my work. I love my clients. They feel like family and I know they feel the same towards me. So it’s a sweet deal… frfr!

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
So I own The Glam Bar of course where I specialize in sugaring, which is an all-natural form of hair removal. The paste has no foreign chemicals or additives, it’s literally made from sugar, water and lemon juice. I use no sticks or strips… Just my gloved hands , the sugar and an easy flick to remove it. It’s never applied hot so there’s no chance of getting burned like traditional wax and you also experience less ingrown hair if that’s an issue. I service EVERYONE. Women, men, non-binary , straight , gay , transitioning, black , white, young and older! TGB is for everyone. I also specialize in skincare(facials, vajacials, microdermabrasion, chemical peels, etc.) I also do lash lifts, brow laminations, makeup ,and provide training in all services that I offer.

I believe my business sits apart from others because of my love for what I do. Work never feels like work because I enjoy it and I also enjoy my clients, there’s always something new.

Getting where I am has not been easy but I didn’t expect it to be. I started my business with what little savings I had at the time and I’ve had to make it work. The best way that I’ve managed to work through it is by remembering my “why”. This industry definitely has the ability to make or break you but I’ll always fight for what I want.

I’ve learned to give myself grace. I’m only one person doing a million things. Even though I just hit my second year, I’m still new and I’m still learning.

I want the world to know that I’m a growing brand but to not overlook me. I’m in the business to do more than make money. I love being able to impact my clients and to see smiles on their faces when they leave out my door. I’m not a franchise so every client counts. That’s why I customize the experience for each client that comes in. Grow with me!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Oooh this a great question. I’m a huge foodie so I LOVE trying all types of new places but I definitely have my favorites. Trulucks is always a place to go on any occasion. The calamari and crab cakes is my absolute favorite and my drink of choice is the Voilà. I also love Lost & Found, super chill and the food is always good. I’m not big into the clubs so honestly a place like Skybox works for me. I like playing pool and if I decide to hit the dance floor I can just go a few steps over. I would definitely check out the social womens group Hey New Friends! Definitely a godsend for any ladies new to Houston and looking to meet up and hang with other down to earth, fun AND professional women from all over the country. Houston is huge so finding the right crowd can be difficult at times but HNF helps fill that void. I’m glad to have them.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I have to shoutout my daughters and clients. Being an entrepreneur and starting a business without a loan or any assistance meant that I would have to make some sacrifices and my daughters were so supportive and understanding. The majority of my clients have been with me for over a year, some are even on two years. They come time after time and they refer and post me constantly… without having to ask. So those are the real vips and I love them!
