We had the good fortune of connecting with Selah Sapphire and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Selah, can you tell us about an impactful book you’ve read and why you liked it or what impact it had on you?
One book that had a significant impact on me is “Man’s Search for Meaning” by Viktor E. Frankl. This book, written by a Holocaust survivor and psychiatrist, explores the author’s experiences in Nazi concentration camps and delves into his psychotherapeutic approach known as logotherapy.
What struck me most about this book was Frankl’s ability to find meaning and purpose even in the most unimaginable and horrific circumstances. Through his own personal suffering and observations of others in the camps, he argues that finding meaning in life, even in the face of extreme suffering, is essential for human resilience and psychological well-being.
Frankl’s insights challenged me to reflect on my own life and the importance of finding purpose and meaning in every situation, no matter how difficult. It made me appreciate the resilience of the human spirit and the power of perspective in shaping our experiences.
Moreover, “Man’s Search for Meaning” emphasized the idea that we have the freedom to choose our attitudes and responses to life’s challenges, even when we cannot control our circumstances. This message of personal responsibility and inner freedom resonated deeply with me and influenced my outlook on life.
Overall, this book left a lasting impact on me by teaching me valuable lessons about resilience, meaning, and the human capacity for hope even in the darkest of times. It reinforced the importance of finding purpose in my own life and approaching challenges with a sense of meaning and perspective.

I stumbled upon poetry by mistake during the COVID-19 pandemic. Artistic expression became my creative outlet and source of solace and self-expression during a period of loneliness, anxiety, and depression. Poetry provided comfort, catharsis, and a means of processing complex emotions. To this end, writing poetry served as my form of therapy. It served as my source of empowerment during a time I was trying to be strong when I didn’t have the strength. My experience highlights the transformative power of art and creativity in navigating difficult circumstances. Through poetry, I found a way to channel my emotions, cope with my struggles, and I discovered new insights about myself and the world around me.
As a diagnosed individual navigating with Bipolar II Disorder, with elevated levels of anxiety, depression, and performance anxiety, writing and performing poetry can present challenges. However, spoken word and spoken word performances are a part of my journey to becoming. It’s a powerful tool for self-expression, healing, and self-discovery. Artistic expression provides a means of channeling my emotions, thoughts, and experiences into art that not only resonates with others, but it serves as a source of empowerment and healing for myself. To overcome challenges, I first take time to reflect on the challenges I’m facing. To this end, I draw upon my spiritual insight to find meaning and guidance in challenging situations through prayer and meditation to gain strength and perspective. Finally, I view challenges as opportunities for learning and growth. I embrace the lessons they offer and use them as steppingstones toward personal and spiritual development.
I’ve realized that sometimes, our paths in life take unexpected turns, leading us to new and exciting opportunities that we may not have imagined for ourselves initially. Embracing these unexpected opportunities and following our passions can lead to fulfilling and enriching experiences. Whether it was a sudden realization of your creative talents, an unexpected opportunity that presented itself, or a leap of faith into a new and exciting endeavor, embracing your creative journey can be a transformative and rewarding experience. Exploring and expressing your creativity professionally can open doors to new possibilities, personal growth, and the fulfillment of your wildest dreams. No matter where your creative path takes you, remember to embrace the journey, stay true to yourself and your vision, and continue to pursue your passions with enthusiasm and dedication. Your unique perspective and creativity have the power to inspire others and make a meaningful impact in the world of art and beyond.
As I continue this journey with my poetry, I will always remember that my words can resonate with others who may be experiencing similar challenges. I want to use my poetry as a beacon of hope, empathy, and understanding. My voice matters! My voice is a powerful force for progress and healing in a world that often craves both. I’m most proud of the fact that I’ve weathered storms, navigated difficult circumstances, and I found the strength to keep moving forward and emerge stronger on the other side.

Venues like the NRG Stadium, Smart Financial Center, Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion, Toyota Center, White Oak Music Hall, and House of Blues frequently host concerts featuring both mainstream and emerging artists. My favorite is the House of Blues due to its intimate atmosphere.
If you enjoy stage plays immensely as I do, I recommend visiting venues such as The Alley Theatre, Stages Repertory Theatre, and the Ensemble Theatre, which showcase a mix of classic plays, contemporary dramas, and original works. In addition, if you enjoy free outdoor performances, I recommend the Miller Outdoor Theatre. Situated in Hermann Park, the Miller Outdoor Theatre hosts a wide range of free events, including concerts, musicals, dance performances, and stage plays. Its spacious outdoor amphitheater provides a picturesque setting for enjoying live entertainment under the stars.
Houston is also known for its versatility in food. My favorite cuisine is seafood. My favorite food places are near and dear to my heart because my mother and I would always visit these places when I was growing up. For seafood, I enjoy visiting hidden gems or “hole in the wall” spots such as CN Seafood Market, T&T Seafood Market, Mambo, and Connies. CN Seafood Market is known for its authentic fried fish and shrimp while T&T is known for its flavorful sauteed shrimp fried rice. Each place has its own unique offerings and atmosphere with affordable prices, and generous portions of food.
