We had the good fortune of connecting with Serenia Jefferson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Serenia, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
The thought process behind my business started when I transitioned into being natural. After being able to bring my hair back to a healthy state I thought “I can help other women achieve healthy hair!” I came to this realization when I was a freshman in high school. Since then I knew I wanted to become a hairstylist. After graduating high school I went to cosmetology school and created my business officially taking on the name Slayed Crownss.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
What sets my business apart from others is that I put my clients needs before their wants to ensure that they can have the healthiest hair possible. Not only that but I educate my clients about their hair while sitting in my chair. I take the time out to actually get to know my clients and their lifestyles to give them each a personalized regimen and product recommendations. Getting to where I am now hasn’t been easy. Starting out in the hair industry can be very hard as far as getting clientele and actually getting people to try you out and come back. I’ve upgraded the way I advertise every time I find a new way that’s bringing clients in. I use ads, try to post consistently, interact, and use different social media platforms. I have also passed out cards to anyone I see that may be looking for a new hairstylist. One lesson I’ve learned along the way is to just have more faith in myself and work for myself completely. The last salon I worked at, I was still working for someone so I couldn’t really express myself the way I wanted. I had to abide by that persons rules and do what they say and do it exactly how they want it done. I also feel like I was taken advantage of because of my skill, hard work and dedication. I highly recommend that any hairstylist that is passionate about what they do, to just step out on faith and get a suite instead of doing commission or booth rental in a salon. Being able to use the products, tools, and offer the services you want will take you a long way! You will also be able to cater to each client rather than having to rush everyone out of your chair. Have faith in your skill and your passion for what you do! Having faith and being passionate has kept me moving forward no matter how many times I’ve gotten knocked down during my career.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My parents has always been my number one supporters when it came to me pursuing my career as a professional hairstylist. My journey for wanting to be a hairstylist all started with going natural myself. I did my own big chop and taught myself how to care for my hair. My dad would always catch me in the kitchen whipping up some crazy concoction for my hair. And he would say “You should start making your own hair products.” Even though I was like 14 years old and didn’t have a clue where I would even start with something of that sort. He believed that I could do it no matter what. My dad would always push me to go above and beyond with anything put my mind to. My mom has always been the creative one that helped me create business cards, business shirts, bonnets, etc. My mom would always make my vision come to life as well as teaching me new crafting skills to help ,y business because I sell hand decorated bonnets. I want to give my parents a big shoutout for always being there to support me.
