We had the good fortune of connecting with Shana Burns and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Shana, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I pursue an artistic, creative career for my freedom, my freedom of expression, and my freedom of choice. To constantly pursue self-expression through many art forms: writing, creative direction, curation, and modeling.
Being a multi-denominational creative, my career why is based upon my alignment with my purpose.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
What sets my art apart from most of my peers is where I pull my inspiration from: the cloth I’m cut from, my personal experiences & desires, and my deep passion for telling a story that serves or fulfills a purpose. I am excited that I’m just starting; I have so much more to look forward to in my career, even though I am approaching year ten as a model & creative. I’ve gotten where I am today professionally due to trial & error, and it was not easy. An open mind and desire for complete freedom keep me going to overcome challenges. I’ve learned over time that you can not be afraid to try time and time again. I want the world to know my name, Shana B. & that anything is possible. Despite how cliche it may sound, we are not bound by our environment and circumstances. We can change our lives and rewrite our narratives because it’s what I’ve done and will continue to do.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I love Chicago so much and am constantly exploring new, fun things to do. I want to mention this is during Summer Time Chi, so I would show a perfect friend of mine a time by starting the first day at the lake to decompress and have lunch as we enjoy the lake and city view. I’ll ensure we visit Peaches, The Pancake House, and somewhere new to use both for breakfast and brunch. For daytime fun, I’m sure it’ll be something art-related in the city; we’ll hang out in Hyde Park or The South Loop. I’ll also make sure we have dinner at Virtue and 14 Parish. For a great night, Room 43 on a Thursday night for some House Music, Nights & Weekends, or anywhere within the West or South Loop.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
A big part of my story is who & what I come from my family and our circumstances — making me a third-generation Chicagoan from the South Side. My village and upbringing have allowed me to dream big and thirst for expression in any way I could to release, be heard, or even speak out for others. Being cut from this very particular cloth has given me. A heart, mindset, and moral integrity that allows me to be who I am in every room I step in, confidently, network & create.
