We had the good fortune of connecting with Shanice Lewis and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Shanice, can you tell us more about your background and the role it’s played in shaping who you are today?
I’m from New Iberia, Louisiana. Uptown to be exact in “dodge city” projects. Very humble beginnings that have shaped who I am today. I’ve produced a better lifestyle than I grew up seeing and I’m humbled by that alone. I didn’t always go to school with the people in my neighborhood so it allowed me to see another side of things, less dysfunctional families, and most importantly black people as business owners, homeowners, and married with families. I didn’t see much positivity in my neighborhood and it stirred something up in me at a very young age. I would always tell my mom things like “I can’t wait to get away from here!” And I meant that from the bottom of my heart cause I’ve never lived there since graduating high school in 2010. I’m so grateful for the life lessons and the people who made impressions on me, all of it has impacted who I am today.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
The Writing Co started as a hobby! Before giving it a name it was “Shanice Resumes” not seeing how far I would eventually go with it, but when I felt I had outgrown the “hobby” I gave it a real name. What sets me apart is not only do I write resumes and cover letters but I also supply any writing needs of my clients, rather it’s help with a research topic, writing a letter to a utility company, or editing essays for college students. The Writing Co features a wide range of services that are discussed as needed. I am most proud of the reputation that my business has. I’ve never had (fingers crossed) anyone to say anything negative about the company or brand and I take pride in that. It’s a one man show and I do my best to produce the best customer service possible. To get to where I am today it was far from easy, actually everyday is a challenge but I take every challenge as a learning experience to do it better next go around and solve issues in less time, because time is money! I want the world to know that I am working for my clients out of purpose and passion. Being an educator has positioned me to help people reach their greatest potential and I complete every task or job as if it was for myself or family members. I make all of my clients experience very personal, because I aim for them to love the product; many writing services are much more generic than that. The Writing Co works with love and respect.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
My best friend visits Houston and we are outside, OK! Friday nights at Grooves is always a great time. Wake up Saturday and Brunch is at Taste Bar + Kitchen followed by a nap and then shopping at Memorial City Mall or Galleria, later that night at Prospect Park for some good music and hookah. On Sunday brunch at 5015 with some good music til about 4:00, then a lit day party at Chapman and Kirby followed by a nightcap at “The Spot” in Eado. During the week I’m exercising at Bayou Buffalo park before dark and ending the night with a cigar at Sweet Lips Cigar Lounge. For hump day activities I’m at Seaside Lounge for rooftop vibes and good drinks! My favorite places to go are in 3rd ward, Midtown, and on Washington Ave. 3rd ward is full of my kind of people: black, fun, and civilized.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I love this and there are many people who have impacted my life but at this time I want to give a shout-out to my sorority. Gods gift to Earth, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. Being apart of Delta has played a major part in my development. My home chapter specifically, Alpha Tau, has birth in me a complete beast. I know I can go after my dreams, drive the car I desire, and have the career I deserve because I see the women who came before me do just that. Being apart of Delta has elevated my mindset and it’s the greatest thing that’s ever happened to me.
