We had the good fortune of connecting with ShaQuaz Wilder and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi ShaQuaz, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
When starting my online shoe business and electric scooter business, my thought process was driven by several factors. Firstly, I observed a growing trend in e-commerce and saw an opportunity to tap into the online retail market. I believed that an online platform could reach a wider audience and provide convenience for customers looking to buy shoes or electric scooters.

Additionally, I noticed a rising interest in sustainable transportation solutions and the increasing demand for electric scooters. I saw this as a chance to contribute to a greener future while offering a practical and efficient mode of transportation to customers.

Furthermore, I considered the potential for growth and profitability in both industries. I conducted market research, analyzed the competition, and identified gaps in the market that my businesses could fill. With thorough planning and strategic implementation, I felt confident that I could establish successful ventures in these sectors.

Overall, my decision to start these businesses was influenced by a combination of market opportunities, sustainability considerations, and the potential for profitability.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I began my entrepreneurial journey in 2015, creating tie-blankets and pillows. In 2019, I expanded my business to include selling kids’ clothes and shoes, naming it Kaydence’s Klozet after my daughter. She had expressed a desire to sell her own clothes and shoes from her closet. As time passed, she became more interested in selling shoes, as she has a passion for them.

In 2023, I ventured into the electric scooter business with the intention of bringing this sustainable mode of transportation to my hometown. One of my motivations was to address the transportation challenges faced by Prairie View college students, who often have limited options for getting around. While still in the process of establishing this new venture, I am taking it slow and ensuring that everything is set up properly.

Building my businesses has not been an easy journey. I have faced various challenges along the way, but I have overcome them through perseverance, adaptability, and seeking guidance from mentors like Jasmine Espy from the SBDC. These challenges have taught me valuable lessons, such as the importance of market research, strategic planning, and continuously adapting to meet customer needs.

What sets my business apart is the personal touch and dedication I bring to each customer interaction. I take pride in providing high-quality products and excellent customer service. I am excited about the growth potential of my brand and the positive impact it can have on my community.

Ultimately, I want the world to know that my brand is driven by a commitment to sustainability, accessibility, and customer satisfaction. I strive to make a difference by offering products that bring joy, convenience, and eco-friendliness to people’s lives. My story is one of passion, determination, and a desire to create positive change through entrepreneurship.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my best friend were visiting the area for a week, I would aim to provide them with a mix of family-friendly activities and some adult-oriented fun. Here’s a rough itinerary:

Day 1:
– Grab a pizza and head to the local park with our kids. Let them play on the playground while we catch up.
– Take the kids back to my mom’s house and let them ride around the neighborhood on scooters or bikes.

Day 2:
– Plan a day trip to a nearby city or town with more attractions. Visit museums, parks, or any other family-friendly destinations in the area.
– Have a nice dinner at a local restaurant known for its delicious cuisine.

Day 3:
– Explore the beauty of the countryside by going on a nature hike or taking a scenic drive.
– Have a picnic lunch at a picturesque spot, enjoying the tranquility and fresh air.

Day 4:
– Treat ourselves to a relaxing spa day. Get massages, facials, or any other pampering treatments we desire.
– Enjoy a leisurely lunch at a charming cafe or restaurant.

Day 5:
– Take a day trip to a nearby winery or brewery for a tasting tour. Enjoy sampling different wines or craft beers.
– Have a fun and lighthearted dinner at a local pub, enjoying good food and drinks.

Day 6:
– Spend the day exploring local shops and boutiques, finding unique treasures and supporting small businesses.
– Have a girls’ night out at a lively bar or nightclub, dancing and having a blast.

Day 7:
– Wrap up the trip with a relaxing day at the countryside. Find a peaceful spot by a lake or river and spend the day fishing, picnicking, or simply enjoying the serene surroundings.
– Have a farewell dinner at a cozy country restaurant, savoring delicious comfort food.

While my area may not have big city attractions, we make the best of it by enjoying nature, quality time with loved ones, and exploring local gems. The focus is on creating memorable experiences and embracing the simplicity and charm of the countryside.
