We had the good fortune of connecting with Sharelle B. & Sierra T. and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sharelle B. & Sierra T., what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Back in 2017, we really had some things that we wanted to say and was tired of using 140 on Twitter to get them out. It’s hard to be selected for a platform as Black women so we decided to take matters into our own hands. Headwraps & Lipsticks: the Podcast was founded after a meeting at Ink & Ivy, the purchase of two microphones and a mixer. That was 5 years ago.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
From the name, you would think our podcast is about one thing when it’s absolutely not. To be honest, that’s how we can always tell who truly listens and who doesn’t. Headwraps & Lipsticks: the Podcast is a weekly podcast that takes a deep dive into politics, trending topics, and pop culture. For the past few years, our show has grown in tremendous ways, with new segments each season. We open the show every week with “What can’t you wrap your head around?,” corny jokes, and more.
The road to success wasn’t always easy. As an independent podcast, we’ve had our bumps in the road. The financial responsibilities, or securing guests on the show…it can be a struggle but when you see people telling you how much they love your show, or laughing at something you said, or the numbers on Youtube and TikTok growing, its all worth it.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Since Charlotte is the largest city between DC and Atlanta, sometimes it can get lost on the radar. But when you get here, there is plenty to do. On top of the Panthers and Hornets games, there’s two indoor mini golf places called Stroke and Puttery….so much fun. Or you can go to Southend where there are plenty of bars and restaurants. You can also hit Frankie’s, which is a huge arcade, with indoor games and bowling and outdoor rides.
One of the nicest things about Charlotte are the thriving Black owned spots, like Leah & Louise. their food is so amazing, its not even funny. Or you can get your shopping and creative vibe on at Dupp & Swat. Then their are so many brunch spots like Paparazzi and 1501 Mint….it’s always lit there.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
