We had the good fortune of connecting with Shaun Wilkins and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Shaun, every day, we about how much execution matters, but we think ideas matter as well. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
I had been running one of my church’s social media accounts which involved creating original graphics, posting on a schedule, creating flyers, and editing videos. A few people complimented me on my eye for design, and over time, I realized not only did I have talent for it, I also really enjoyed the creative process. After attending a branding/networking event with other entrepreneurs I was convinced part of my purpose was in starting this business that can be a real help to someone.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I think what sets me apart from others is that I am Shaun Wilkins and there is only one of me. I don’t say that to sound arrogant at all, I promise! I just believe the phrase “Being you is your superpower” to be true, and I take that to heart in how I operate. I know there are commonalities I share with people in some areas, but God also created me to fulfill a specific purpose. I’ve been able to get to where I am today because of my personal brand with people. I’ve been able to build trust with people in me as a person, which in turn has allowed them to be able to trust me with their digital media needs. The lessons I’ve learned so far are: 1. to be honest with people about your knowledge while also reassuring them of your belief that you can deliver what they need. 2. Try to deliver ahead of time. When you have a deadline, don’t wait up until to send the work. Send it in enough time so that time doesn’t present so much pressure. 3. Pray over your business. It is as big as any time or monetary investment you can make into your success. The most challenging thing I’ve had to deal with is getting out of my own way and realizing perfection isn’t as important as progress. We can criticize ourselves worse than anyone else can, and sometimes we criticize ourselves into submission before putting ourselves out there. I’m betting on myself, and I would encourage anyone out there to do the same!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
On the venue tip we would have to go to Sunday service at Wheeler Avenue, take in live music/poetry at Alley Kat, The Museum of Fine Arts (on Thursday because we’re never to good for a free visit), take a bike tour around 3rd Ward with Let’s Do This Houston, spend an evening at The Improv, and hang out at The Flat. On the food tip the list would include The Breakfast Klub, The Turkey Leg Hut, Bodega’s Taco Shop for Taco Tuesday, Lucille’s, Bourbon Sizzler, Cool Runnings, and they have to, have to have some Frenchy’s chicken.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I have to give a huge shoutout to my parents: my dad who inspired me to think outside of the 9=5 income model and my mom who has loved me and covered me in prayer every day of my life. Next is my wife, Adrianne, who waters me with love, affirmation, and encouragement and pushes me to walk in purpose. Then, I have to shoutout my friend and brother Jay of @jlaraymedia, one of the best videographers in the country, for pouring wisdom and knowledge into me since 2016, calling me out on my excuses, and not allowing me to be comfortable in mediocrity. Next is my sister, Joyce of @j.wilkinsphotography, one of the best photographers in the country, who has been giving me tips and pointers and connecting me with people all along the way. This might have been long, but I’ve been blessed to be connected to people who make sure I’m not doing this all on my own.
