We had the good fortune of connecting with Sheena Drummond and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sheena, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
The most important factor behind the success of my business is my authenticity. I believe in being who I am from beginning to end in all that I do. In doing so I am able to build relationships with those who choose to work with me. The work that I do is based on seeing a need for support during perinatal and postpartum phases of life. Because people are vulnerable during this time being authentic and realistic has ensured that those who walk away from a conversation with me feel empowered and prepared for birth and postpartum.
What should our readers know about your business?
I work with expecting individuals and families, my passion for birth work stemmed from my personal experiences during my perinatal and postpartum periods. I am most proud of the relationships I build with those I work with. Working with families throughout pregnancy and postpartum is a time where a sense of calm and understanding is needed and that is a large part of what I do in my work. Getting started with birth work and mental health has not been easy because life has its way of throwing lemons to try and disrupt the plans you have. I have been able to overcome challenges I face in my work by having a strong circle of support and engaging in true self care. It’s true that you cannot pour from an empty cup.
Thus far I have learned not to shy away from opportunities and to focus on why I do the work that I do as it ensures I do not lose focus of the ultimate goal and why I started my business.
I want the world to know that it is okay to accept support and that you do not have to do things alone.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
As far as food we would be sure to check out The Breakfast Klub because their chicken and waffles are fire, and ensure we had brunch at Phil & Derek’s because the food is great and so is the atmosphere – it’s full of good energy and a fun staff. We would also have to grab some grub from Soul Food Vegan and The Turkey Leg Hut.
We will have to visit The Buy Black Marketplace at the Shrine as they have vendors and other community-based activities available. We would hang out at one of the major parks as they have nice scenery and trails.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I have a close circle of support that are friends, family, and peers. Each person plays a key role in giving me love and encouragement. They are constantly reminding me that the work I do is not only needed, but that I am exactly the person who should be doing it. I dedicate this shoutout to my close friends, family, and peers because this work is HARD and without their support I would be unable to do what I do.
