We had the good fortune of connecting with Shelby Lynn and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Shelby, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
It’s honestly funny, photography kind of fell into my lap and we’ve been inseparable ever since.
It all started 7 years ago when my husband and were practically babies. I was a stay at home mom, he was a lance corporal in the United States Marine Corps. We were barely making ends meet. I bought a cheap camera on an income tax return, started doing little photoshoots to help make some cash, and the rest is history.
For me, happiness is located within the mechanisms of my camera. With every click of the shutter, I feel more and more alive. Sure, I started out for the wrong reasons and was merely looking to put food on the table. But now? Oh boy do I love taking peoples pictures, editing them in post processing, and creating MAGIC.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My life hasn’t been easy. My career hasn’t been easy. Adulthood hasn’t been easy. It’s taken a long while to get to where I am.
When you ask me how I overcame the challenges, to put it simply, all I can say is that I persevered. I just kept going. Even when it was hard, even when I wanted to lay down and quit, even when my marriage and my life was crumbling around me, I kept getting up everyday, put a smile on my face, and just focused on one foot in front of the other.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
The first place I would take her to is Mico’s Hot Chicken! The best, spiciest, mouthwatering chicken you will ever eat is at their little restaurant.
We would also visit the zoo, the Houston Museum of Natural Science, and Moody Gardens.
I am still getting to know the area, so that is all I got for now!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
The person I want to shoutout is my Grammy, Carole Gibbs.
This woman embodies everything I want to be when I grow up. She didn’t have the easiest life, but the second I was born, we were soulmates. The adventures she’s taken me on, all the trips to Dairy Queen, and every little moment in between, has been the highlights of my life.
From her love of animals, to her love for me, my Grammy has been my #1 cheerleader.
She is the definition of sunshine, the sun and the moon and the stars wrapped up in one human being.
