We had the good fortune of connecting with Skye Schanzer and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Skye, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking.
I believe taking risks is the only way to truly LIVE your life. When I reflect on my life, anything that has sincerely brought me joy or fulfillment has been on the other side of taking a big ol’ step through risk!

I would say I started noticing risk (or adventure as I’ve come to call it) and being aware of how “risky” things can be when I was in my early twenties. My relationship with my now husband was a giant shot in the dark, and starting our family was an even bigger horizon of unknowns. My husband and I fell in love long distance, which is never easy, and growing our family came as a surprise! Yet, both have turned out to be the core of my life and what I am most proud of as a human! The foundation we’ve built as a family and in some ways conquering that risk has given me bravery in life, which I don’t think I otherwise would have had. I feel invincible because I’ve done the riskiest things of all; allowed myself to love and be loved (and given birth)! That unstoppable feeling propelled me into my business!

Starting a business is scary, hard, time-consuming, full of unknowns and financial obligations, and dare I say…risky! But, if we look around, there are millions of businesses in the world. Millions of brave people working through their fears and running their businesses day in and day out. That’s what I came to realize when starting my business and chatting with other business owners, “OH! They’re scared too – they just take action anyways!” That realization made me steadfast in my mentality surrounding my business. There are ups, downs, and standstills. There are scrunched foreheads, laughter, and tears in the shower at the end of long days, but the reward is always worth the risk!

Taking the risk of creating my own business has set an example for my children. They have physical proof that they can create any kind of life they want. They can take what is in their mind and put it out into the physical world. They can paint their canvas any way they want! I would take the risk a million times over to give my children that freedom in their minds.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I own Skye Schanzer Agency, a social media marketing and copywriting company, and absolutely love the creative process I get to be in each day! We help small business owners dominate the social media scene with paid ads, streamlined & automated systems, and copy (writing) that hits their audience right where it counts.

I am most proud of the relationships created with my clients. Their success is my success and a really cool connection always seems to grow between us. My dad was a restaurant owner, so from a very young age, I saw the hard work and dedication it takes to be an entrepreneur and the fact that I get to help other entrepreneurs grow their businesses and make it feel like an ease-filled process for them is very fulfilling at a soul-level for me.

I got to where I am today by hanging in there. Ha! I know that’s not a very cool answer, but there were many times when I just wanted to throw in the towel. I even went on a one-year hiatus, back into the corporate world, and let my business dwindle significantly! Certain circumstances arose while working in the corporate setting that snapped me out of my funk and allowed me to return to my lovely business full steam ahead! Much of business is letting time teach you what needs to be learned and outlasting the voice in your head that tells you to turn around.

I would never call the journey to where I am today easy. Business takes persistence and belief when no one else is around, and I’ve had to muster up a lot of that in dark moments. A huge lesson I’ve learned is the only way to overcome any setback is to keep the big picture of your overall goal in mind and KEEP GOING. It doesn’t feel good every day, but we must take action to keep our momentum, if only for ourselves! When I was in high school, I played soccer. I was a midfielder, and was great friends with the forward on our team. Forwards are the goal scorers. Our forward did not have the best of ball skills and more times than not it looked like she was somersaulting with the ball into the goal. But, she was on Varsity soccer. And, she scored. And she scored a lot. I think of her often, because life and business don’t have to look perfect, shoot, they don’t even need to look good, all that matters is that we press on, and if we do that, we WILL score.

Another lesson I learned is that real-life connections are so vitally important! Networking with the humans in your local area is invaluable to business and well-being. Being able to sit down with people and have conversations about business and all of the emotions and experiences that come with it offers insight and a feeling of togetherness. Business can make ya feel insane sometimes, and knowing you’re not the only one who has felt certain ways can set you free.

Some tactical ways I overcame hard times in my business were; morning meditations, shorter, purposeful daily to-do lists, in-person networking, saying yes to things I didn’t feel ready for, daily exercise, business boundaries, growing confidence in my prices, daily reflection, and niching down with the services I offer.

I want the world to know that life is a beautiful thing and we need your ideas and your business! I live my life by the phrase, “Bring the Happy,” and I carry that with me in all aspects of my life, including business. We set the tone of our days, our lives, and the rooms we enter. We can bring with us whatever we want, and I want to bring the happy. I want people to feel BETTER after having a conversation with me, whether it’s about how to grow their business, or what they packed their kids for lunch that day. We are all so lucky to be on this planet and get to help each other on the journey home. What a gift it all is!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Oh, Houston! If my best friend was visiting, we would definitely have to make a pitstop at Buccees! Talk about genius marketing, Buccees is a flipping gas station that drives people through it’s doors just for that social media post with a tagged location “Buccees.” We would purchase the infamous Beaver Nuggets, hit up the cleanest bathrooms in all of the land, take in the enormity of it all, and be on our way.

We’d definitely need to frolick outside! Two of my favorite spots for hiking are the Sam Houston National Forest and WG Jones State Forest. Miles and miles of trails tucked underneath massive pine trees, with surprising water views. They’re both great places to get lost for a little bit and let your mind roam.

I would also make sure she is aware of the phenomenal food truck culture here in Texas. Ah, the circles of food trucks, picnic benches, and those twinkle lights…what more could a gal want? A favorite spot of mine is Deacon Baldy’s. It always has a good vibe, a great variety of food, and is kid-friendly!

I would make sure to blow her mind with a trip to NASA. You don’t have to be a science nerd to be absolutely mind-blown at the fact that we have left this Earth and gone to space. Whenever I float the idea of NASA to my friends it always seems to be a “meh” response, but once we go, we can’t stop talking about it! The INGENUITY! The GENIUS! The WONDER!

We would definitely need to catch a sports game, either the Dynamo Dash at Shell Energy Stadium, the Houston Astros at Minute Maid Park, or the Texans at NRG! I love a good competition, and I love that we have so many sports right at our fingertips in Houston!

A new favorite activity of mine is Top Golf! Me and my husband went on a date night there recently, and I couldn’t get enough! What a RELAXED way to play golf. Ha! The food was fantastic and the atmosphere is so fun. I would definitely bring my best friend for an afternoon of laughs!

One of my favorite restaurants to eat at and vibe at with my girlfriends is Zanti! They have amazing Italian food and the perfect atmosphere. It’s chic and fun, but not stuffy! I highly recommend snagging a high-top near the bar for the ultimate experience. I would take my best friend here to chat the night away.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Without a doubt, my family! My parents for allowing me to grow up creatively and always telling me how awesome and unstoppable I was, even when it really wasn’t true. Ha! They breathed bravery into me since the day I was born. My husband for always pushing me with the little extra nudge I need to get outside of my comfort zone. My kids for reminding me how beautiful life is every single day and allowing me to slow down and bask in it all with them.
