We had the good fortune of connecting with Somty Okoye and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Somty, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I wanted to help people feel good in their everyday environments. At home, and at work. Knowing that a good portion of adults now work from home, I wanted to focus on the home environment. As a Pediatric Occupational Therapist, majority of my work involved working with sensory integration, regulation, and input. In short, how the sensory input we recieve from our environments directly affects our mood, behavior, & stress level. I quickly realized overstimulation doesn’t only occur in children, but in adults just the same. Real Estate and Design made the perfect sense to dive into. I begin with inteior design, choosing the design and products that were aimed towards well being, stress reduction and sensory regulation. Then I sought to get my Real Estate License, so I can help people choose their dream homes that can do the same.
What should our readers know about your business?
Sensewell Spaces is such a unique buisness model. I have to be honest, it’s been difficult to get my foot on the ground as I feel like no one else is truly tackling it in the manner that we are. Choosing a home, floor plan, and/or design based on how you function, sensory systems, and routine has to be very precise and individualized. My goal is to work with builders in order to assist in planning the designs of houses and buildings to meet more functional and wellbeing needs. I’ve learned to let this process of building my brand naturally flow, it’s hard to not have any business model to follow and creating my own ropes but I’m incredibly passionate about it and want to see it grow worldwide!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Houston is incredibly vast! I feel like I’ve done so much but have only put my toes in the ocean. I love the Memorial City/CityCentre area, that would be my first stop. Get a bite at the Rouxpour then explore city center and maybe go bowling at Bowl & Barrel. The galleria also has my heart, possibly go to a nice lounge during the weekend and get a plate Moxies. The River Oaks area is also on top of my list, the drinks and sushi and RA sushi are top notch. Also a nice stroll at Hermann Park (when it’s not crazy hot outside always puts my mind at ease).
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I have always been self driven and try to figure out things out on my own, but I want to give a shout out to my team leader, friend, and great Real Estate Agent Kevin Dibbz of ViewFinders Collective for his guidance and mentorship.
