We had the good fortune of connecting with Stacey Fike and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Stacey, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Starting my own business was a series of professional decisions that happened rather organically! My initial profession was a Massage Therapist. I was the Lead Therapist opening Spa Nordstrom here in Houston around 20+ years ago. One of my responsibilities was to research and implement new services and treatments. At the time, spray tanning was just starting to infiltrate the beauty industry. I got trained and was off and running! I learned very quickly there is an elite clientele in Houston who like to BE tan but don’t want anyone to know they GET tan. These clients started asking me to come to their homes and GloGirl Spray Tanning mobile services was born! I soon realized mobile services was time consuming and didn’t provide the revenue I needed as a single mom. So, I kept my day-job and started having clients come to my home in my spare time. At one point I decided to count how many gals I had come thru my home and the number was well over 700 spray tan clients! I decided I needed to get my little spray tanning business out of my home and was able to rent a spare room in a local hair salon. I was working all day as a teacher, and then spray tanning all evening. Needless to say, I was burning the candle at both ends. Thankfully, I was able to hire an assistant to work during the days. That assistant is still working alongside me to this day; Alyssa! I soon started to realize I was able to earn a solid income just doing spray tans and took the leap to quit my teaching job and opened my own space. For the last 6 years GloGirl Spray Tanning Boutique is proud to make Houston GLO, Girl!
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
The road leading up to me as founder and owner of GloGirl Spray Tanning Boutique and Sunless Products was full of turns, potholes, some speeding and full-on stops! In hindsight, I knew I wanted to own a tanning salon in high school. While thumbing through college catalogs, I was also flipping through the pages of tanning salon supply magazines. After high school, I attended 1 year of college and just wasn’t getting the “college experience’ my peers seemed to be getting. I enrolled in massage school and immediately started working anywhere I could get hired; high-end hotels, chiropractors, spas, gyms, ANYWHERE! After landing a lead position with Spa Nordstrom, I was able to cultivate what it meant to have a SPA EXPERIENCE, as opposed to just having a massage. Customer service and building customer relationships was my forte all while delivering an indulgent treatment! Those skills are what set GloGirl Spray Tanning apart! I tell my employees all the time, a spray tan is a spray tan is a spray tan, but we offer a spray tan EXPERIENCE!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Houston has a lot to offer, and I relish the opportunity to share hot spots with clients, family and friends alike! Any fun weekend, trip, or event always begins with a GloGirl Spray Tan. Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I have always lived by the motto, ‘you are only as successful as the success you foster in others’. With that being said, there are endless people that have contributed to my success! As a person of faith, none, and I mean NONE of it is possible without putting God at the forefront of all your endeavors and relationships. I have a supportive network of family, friends, and fellow industry professionals that have all contributed to helping me get to where I am today. Whether it be a family member available to pick my daughter from school so I could work, or friends sending me referrals, or willing to offer manual labor! (there’s A LOT behind-the-scenes manual labor involved with running a boutique!) As well as industry professionals sharing their knowledge and expertise. I also appreciate the people and hurdles that were not supportive because in the end those experiences helped me grow as a person and as a business owner.
