Meet STAR Steph | Rapper

We had the good fortune of connecting with STAR Steph and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi STAR, why did you pursue a creative career?
After the pandemic and the death of my dad and dog, I didn’t have interest in much…especially my professional work. There was fitness in which I helped many people including myself reach personal goals. Music was something I started at a young age and as I grew into adulthood I let it slip away from me. It brought me great joy to return back to music after life’s struggles. So, I decided with everything in me that I would just stay there and do that.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My art is my baby! Literally! I birth it, create it, and nurture it. I like to watch it grow and evolve. What sets it apart from others is that it’s a bit of everything. You see me, and depending on the day or what I drop, you can immediately put me in a box. But, I rarely stay there. That’s how my art is. You can’t categorize it. Don’t get it twisted though, I’m not flip floppy. I really have lived different lives, naturally and authentically. It’s a must that I mold all the parts of me into the music. I’m proud of my ability to be free in this and be bold in this process. I’m excited about the now! Most artist want to be big, famous or whatever. I want to be here, right now. I think this is the best phase of this journey…right here with the freedom I have right now. Professionally, I got here by asking questions, researching, and working. That’s it. Simple. Easy? No. I overcame the challenges by being grateful. Much changes when you go from “I have to do this” to “I’m glad I get to do this”. Along the way, I’ve learned that nothing beats the work, there’s really no way around it no matter what! Oh little ol me? I want the world to know that in time, I will…most definitely, without fail, shake this some s***t up!!! Everywhere I go, I bring in the new.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If it’s my bestie then of course we’re starting off the day at my place! I have the best view in the city so we’ll do homemade breakfast on balcony, STAR Steph style…oh with mimosas!

Next, you know ya girl has to stay caffeinated and all my besties know what’s up so I’m hitting up Brass Tacks for my caffeinated vibes. Of course we’re sitting outside and yes we’re taking pics.

Since we’re already in the area, I’m showing my bestie all of downtown, including Discovery Green, all the roof tops, and hot spots. All the tourists stuff she can stand lol. We have to go to an Astros game of course.

Then I’m headed to the tre, 3rd ward Houston and spend some money with my people you know. Of course we’re going to the Bodega, TLH, and 5015.

Knowing bestie, she wants to shop so yes to the Galleria and all the outlets, and Hilcroft/Westheimer with the vibes. We have to stop by Johnny Dang too. We’re on the southwest probably all day, all night type vibes 😂

Wouldn’t be right if we didn’t work out so before she leaves we’re doing a hot girl walk at Hermann Park. If she passes out, the world renowned medical center is right there close by.

Lastly, we’re going to the studio. Man I love iMix Studios.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Yes, of course! My mom! She’s been there from the beginning, helping and sacrificing so I can have a better, fulfilled life. She really doesn’t get enough credit, in all areas of her life. Outside of being an amazing mom and dedicated wife to my father, she was also outstanding in her work. She taught school for 53 years and even saved a kid’s life once! She’s made an impact on many peoples lives. We laugh sometimes because she’s taught long enough to teach parents and their kids, and the kid’s kids. She’s just a great person all around. Very down to earth and can make you laugh without even trying. I’m very proud to have her as my mother.
