We had the good fortune of connecting with Stefan McFall and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Stefan, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I’m naturally a creative person. I have to create something or I lose my mind. Whether it’s playing music or cooking a meal or photographing newlyweds, the act of being creative is a release for me. I don’t think I can ever see myself working in a cubicle or attending meeting after meeting. I get depressed just thinking about it.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My style of photography is bright, vibrant and timeless. I try to avoid gimmicks and trends within the industry to provide my clients with work that will stand the test of time. I picked up a camera back in 2016 as a way of getting out of the house and finding a new creative outlet. At the time, I had fallen out of love with my first passion and what I went to school for, music. It was a pretty depressing time for me, but once I figured out how the camera worked, things picked up in my life and I felt invigorated by my new passion.
I started out by taking pictures of everyday happenings in downtown Houston and I eventually gravitated towards taking photos of people. I still have photos from my early photo sessions and it’s always humbling to see how far I’ve come and the natural progression of my work. I love the fact that in photography, your “mistakes” can actually turn into huge eureka moments that promote growth.
The biggest lesson I’ve learned along the way is to trust your instincts and embrace who you are as an artist and a person. What you naturally like helps you develop your style and helps define your work. For me and my brand, I want it to be known that I am a fun, patient, and caring individual that loves being around people, especially for those once in a lifetime moments. Telling these stories in the form of photographs that will last forever is what I live for.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
My favorite places to hang out in the city are the Houston Arboretum, Montrose, and Galveston. Food wise, you can’t really go wrong all around the city, but I will say that yo-yo’s hotdog stand in rice village is my guilty pleasure that I’ll never say no to. For drinks and hangout vibes, I also really enjoy spending time in East Downtown (Eado) – especially Truck Yard and Neil’s Bahr.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to give a shout out to Melissa Fleming with Houston Paparazzi, a photography company based in Houston, TX. She’s been an amazing mentor and her insight and experience is invaluable. She’s been working as a photographer in the houston area for over 30 years and it definitely shows as her work is timeless and memorable.
