We had the good fortune of connecting with Stephanie Swain and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Stephanie, what is the most important factor behind your success?
Kumon has a strong brand and many parents inquire about our services because they had a referral from another family that had success with Kumon. The most important factor in my business is delivering results with excellent customer service. When you develop students that are studying 2-3 grade levels higher, the parents, teachers, and peers take notice. Parents trust that we are going to deliver results and help their children achieve their academic goals. When you meet and exceed these goals, you continue to drive the “word of mouth” that fuels the growth of your business.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
For more than 60 years, Kumon, which is an after-school academic enrichment program, has helped children achieve success worldwide. We strive to instill in children the desire to achieve and the motivation to learn on their own. Whether your child is seeking enrichment, needs help catching up, or is just beginning his or her academic career, Kumon is designed to help students develop a love of learning. I am so proud of a few exceptional students that I would like to mention. We have an eighth grader that completed both the math and reading program on twelfth grade level after studying at our center over several years. We have a student that started at our center when she was 5 years old, relocated to India, and achieved top 5 ranking in an International math competition. Recently, we had a student who started at 4 years old, has been studying at the center a little over a year, and is now ranked #2 in the USA among all students studying in Kumon at her age. She is five years old and studying material on a fifth grade level. These success stories affirm that Kumon’s approach is one of a kind in that we seek to maximize the potential of each child and not hold them back based on their age or grade level. I became a Kumon Instructor after seeing how effective the program was for my son when he struggled with reading when he was starting first grade. Now in the sixth grade, he is and exceptional reader and straight A student. Kumon gives your child a great deal of confidence that extends throughout primary and secondary school. A strong start gives your child a huge advantage in life. Kumon is not just a math and reading program, but builds discipline and lifelong skills.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Houston has so much diversity and great restaurants. My top picks would be Lupe Tortilla (Tex-Mex), Pinkerton’s (Barbecue), and Brennan’s (Creole/Cajun). Top areas to explore would be Chinatown, Galleria, and Museum District.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Jodi Buck is a dedicated, loyal employee that has been working at Kumon Westchase since we first opened back in 2016. Jodi has a lifelong dedication and passion for early childhood education. She has continued to sharpen her knowledge of the Kumon method and helped many children achieve their academic goals, including children with learning challenges like autism and dyslexia. She also helps to train new staff and provides instruction assistance to ensure that all children get the right level of attention. Parents have taken notice quality that we deliver and Jodi plays a big role in helping to maintain high benchmark for our center. The quality that we deliver is reflected in the outstanding endorsements that are reflected in our online reviews.
