Meet Steve Passons | Owner of Be Someone Sports

We had the good fortune of connecting with Steve Passons and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Steve, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I started Be Someone Sports initially because I wanted to host youth basketball tournaments for select basketball teams. I saw a huge gap in the tournaments we were attending and felt that it could be better. I wanted to provide an experience for the players and the families that wasn’t offered at select basketball tournaments. Then we were approached and asked to start a recreational basketball league. which has become one of the premier leagues in the Houston area.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Things that set up apart from other leagues are the fully customized uniforms. we offer uniforms that are LOUD and exciting. We offer an end of the year ALL-STAR game that we bring in a DJ and light show. We turn off the lights in the gym, just like in a NBA All-Star Game have music playing lights flashing and introduce the selected players 1 by 1 by name and number. We keep season stats on players and post league leader, power rankings, and players of the week. We are looking to get into local newspapers to write up columns on players so that the kids can have newspaper clippings like the old days. We have a good social media following where I post “CONFIRMED IN” fliers and mixtapes for the kids. The CONFIRMED IN flyers are flyers made from a picture the parents submit and we post these on our social media and send to the parents in hopes they will post to help spread the word of our league. Mixtapes are video highlight reels with music that show the great moments in a game. At the end of each season we have a tournament for all the teams in each division and they battle for the championship rings.

The building of this league was challenging. I am a person that like to know my faults. and I am always looking to improve on my mistakes and my successes. i want to leave families in my league looking forward to the next season. I want them to want to come back and bring their friends. so always hunting for the next thing is a challenge. I enjoy collaborating with other companies to create bigger and better brand events. I want to create a league that changes the industry and helps parents and kids to remember how much fun they had while they were growing up.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Depending on what they enjoy doing there are endless things to do in the Houston Area. Always sporting events happening, concerts on any given night, beaches, amazing restaurants throughout the area. The day and night life in Houston always feels like there is something to do.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to say thanks to all the families that have supported us and shared our information helping to create this wonderful league. Without the great families in the community we wouldn’t be where we are today.
