We had the good fortune of connecting with Sweetie Shumaker and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sweetie, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Taking a risk is the same as belief for me. Hebrews 11:1 says, “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” In the same way, when you take a risk, you’re hoping for a specific outcome! As an artist, entrepreneur, athlete, or content creator, there is no guarantee that people will like you or notice your hard work. Also, you risk being criticized. It’s important to check your motives behind why you are taking the risk in the first place. What goal are you trying to achieve? Once you’re aware of your why, only then will you be able to stand firm regardless of the outcome.
Things in life don’t always go as planned, but a person who has never lost anything won’t be able to appreciate success. There’s a saying, “You either take the risk or lose the chance.” You owe it to yourself to see the outcome! What if everything does work out? What if things turned out better than you imagined? What if this time is the time that you finally see everything that you’ve been hoping for?
What’s the worst that can happen? So what if it didn’t work out those other 9 or 10 times! Have enough faith to believe that as long as you do your best, God will do the rest!
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
What makes me the most proud of my work is that my talent is God-given. Every song tells a different story, and each story will impact people in different ways. I write a lot of songs about my hopes and expectations for the future, but the majority of my songs are based off of my past and present experiences. In 2022, I was convicted because of the previous music that I had put out, and so half way through 2023, I fully transitioned over from secular music.
My passion for proclaiming the goodness of God stemmed from my love and respect for Jesus Christ. He delivered me from sin, so I wish to use my voice to glorify him. I wish to serve others with the music that I make. If you’re having a bad day, I want you to play one of my songs and feel relief. If you’re in need of motivation, I want you to play my music and be uplifted. If you want to rock out and sing praises to God, I want you to be able to! Music plays a huge role in our daily lives. Of course it was not easy to get to this point; I had to stop being selfish. Instead of self-glorification, I had to take up my cross and put God first! Once I put God first, everything else just fell into place. I still have to work hard, but I feel a sense of fulfillment in my work now.
I’m not content with just going through the motions of life. Every day I choose to show up. I’m not perfect, and I’ve achieved nothing on my own. All the glory belongs to Jesus Christ!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I loveee going to the Cheesecake factory! The location at the Galleria is my favorite place to visit because we can shop afterwards. Another hidden Gem is Bbq Chicken on Westheimer & Dunvale. They make the most crispy & delicious Honey Garlic Wings! Omggg
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My mom, Myesha (48), and my first cousin, Clement (40), have been a huge support system for me. Whenever I had ideas or businesses that I wanted to bring to life, they were always the first to support me. They didn’t allow me to rush into things blindly; they made sure that I was aware of the pros and cons. Even if I started something and later decided not to finish it, they were always understanding. Having someone who’s willing to hear you out and allow you to take risks without judgement is a blessing. We’re all trying to figure it out, so it’s important to give each other grace! Their support enabled me to figure out exactly what it is that I wanted to do the rest of my life! My mom has even participated in many of my music videos! She’s featured on songs that I’ve recorded in the car for my social media page. I’m making music for the Kingdom!!
