We had the good fortune of connecting with Tamika K. Cross, MD and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tamika K., what is the most important factor behind your success?
Persistence. In life we all go through trials and tribulations and the pathway to success is never straight. Despite the obstacles or challenges thrown my way, persistence in pursuing my dreams was the most important factor. Regardless of wanting to give up several times, I had to keep pushing through those tough times.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I recently became a debut author with my book, “What a Doctor Looks Like.” It’s an inspirational and powerful memoir that highlights my journey in becoming a doctor. I share my unique experiences, obstacles, and lessons learned along the way. Society frequently convinces us that certain dreams are unrealistic and unattainable, but it’s important that we don’t internalize that as our truth. Throughout my professional and personal journey, I had to combat feelings of self-doubt and imposter syndrome.
I realized the power in having key mentors in life who have arrived at the places I was trying to go. Taking advantage of opportunities and resources to assist me in achieving my goals was important as well. Without the right mentorship, many of us wouldn’t have access to those resources.
Success takes hard work and sacrifice despite how easy it may appear from the outside. I am dedicated to mentoring our next generation of doctors. I want children to know that they too can become whatever it is they set their heart on, regardless of where they come from, or what they look like. The path isn’t easy but their dreams can become a reality with hard work, sacrifice, determination, and trusting the process.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
What I love most about Houston is that there are SO MANY things to do on any given day of the week! A week long visit from my BFF would entail bike riding on one of the many trails, nice dinner on the Bayou, a day trip to Galveston including a boat ride, trip to the zoo, spa day, photo ops in the graffiti park, and top it off with a weekend brunch.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My family is hands down my biggest supporters. From my parents and big brother Melvin, to my grandparents, they have supported me through every step of my journey and I would not be where I am today without them.
