We had the good fortune of connecting with Tamika R. Newman. MBA and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tamika R., can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
As a high school coach and teacher, I was very frustrated with the commitment to the overall wellbeing of coaches, teachers, athletes, and students. When I decided to leave secondary education, I wanted to go back and provide tools and strategies to help all parties become the best version of themselves while pursuing their individual goals.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Grit and Grind Athletics is an athletic service provider. We give coaches and athletes the tools and strategies to be courageous and innovative leaders to reach optimal performance on and off the playing field/court.
Some of the services we provide are volleyball camps, speed and agility training, mental skills training, and coaches education and programming.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
For Brunch I love Tastebar in Midtown. You can find live music at Edge Water Winery in Sugarland. Discovery Green park is great for sightseeing and catching some sun.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I have to shout out my grandmother first. She saw something in me and decided to push me just enough to see it come to fruition. She was a great example of having faith, working hard, and being prepared for an opportunity when it presented itself, She made me believe there were gonna be opportunities for me and I needed to be courageous enough to pursue them. I also owe a great deal of credit to the church I grew up in. Fontaine First Baptist in Northeast Houston. The first family of our church was a great example of being servant leaders. They were selfless people who worked tirelessly for the youth and elderly in our community. They are the reason service is one of my core values. Every day I wonder how can I help someone today.
