We had the good fortune of connecting with Tammy Allen and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tammy, as a parent, what have you done for you children that you feel has had the most significant impact?
The most important action I’ve taken for my children is setting the right examples. It involves teaching them that discipline is a form of love, instilling the belief that you have to earn things for yourself, and emphasizing that honesty is beneficial in the long term.
Entitlement is a recipe for disaster, no body owes you anything, you have to work hard for what you want and need to survive in life.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am a creative wedding cake baker and designer, and what distinguishes me is my passion for art and my experience in the field. I take great pride in overcoming the challenge of persistence in an industry where African American women are often underrepresented. My unique flavors, developed over the years, set me apart from others. Flavors that you cannot get nowhere else such as (Texas Melon, Butter Gran Marnier, Chocolate Hennessy) just to name a few. I am especially proud of the support we receive from all kinds of people in our community for our small business.
From the beginning, I established myself by offering customers an experience that some wedding cake decorators were not providing. I made it a priority to ensure that the taste of the cake and the moistness was just as important as its appearance, all while maintaining consistency in my products. It was certainly challenging, as there were not many women in the industry who resembled me. I had to prove myself and strive to be better than those who were already established, making the journey far from easy.
Through this experience, I learned that rejection is a part of the process. It’s crucial to maintain a mindset of resilience, staying positive and understanding that success doesn’t come overnight. I cherish the close-knit, family-oriented atmosphere of my business. I enjoy witnessing our customers start families and watching their children grow up. We are a family oriented business, and I love seeing those joyful faces return time after time with their families.
We offer some of the most unique-tasting cakes you will ever find in the Houston area for everyday eating. What I wish to convey about my brand is my love for all people, my commitment to creating beautiful edible artful wedding cakes, the dedication of baking with love, and the joy of making people happy is what my brand is about.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Here’s a little itinerary: I would host a gathering at my home that would include a home cooked meal, perhaps take them to a some of games, and then do some shopping at the mall or outlet. If it were a week-long trip, I would include a visit to art galleries and enjoy some skating together, and maybe take in a movie.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would give a shout out to my parents for unconditional love they gave me, and for instilling in me to trust in God. My family throughout the years who have supported me with finances, words of encouragement, and just believing in me. Last but certainly not the least is Mr. Allen my husband who is an interesting person, he never meets a stranger, he gives very good sound advice, very supportive, and always willing to go the extra mile for me.
